DTE Energy

Engineering Support Organization Intern

May - August 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I appreciated my employer for getting me out in the field to participate in the hands-on experience of being a Metallurgical Technician as soon as I got started with the company. As an individual who likes to get her hands dirty, I did just that-going to the plant to perform inspections on tubes and boilers in addition to cutting and mounting things up in the lab. Everyone in the company wanted to see you grow and become better than you were when you first arrived, which is always a great thing!

co-op

May - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I was in the DR SOC and I did data analysis. I thought that the people in my section were some of the best co-workers that I have ever had honestly. The people in my area knew plenty about what they were doing and in their respective specialties and were always offering help if I needed it on any software of project. Before leaving, every one of my co-workers gave me their business cards or personal contact information if I needed a letter of recommendation or a job recommendation at any point in the future.

What I wish was different

I only wish I could have worked their longer honestly. They were fine with me having almost no experience on the software I was using and were always easy to contact.

Advice

Ask for help whenever needed and keep up with the events going on in and outside the company. They have days with festivals and other events that occur relatively often, so keep a look out.

Business Administration/Finance Intern

June - August 2018 • New Milford, PA

What I liked

I liked being hands on within their business structure. My fellow employees were all very nice and helpful if I ever had a question about anything. I think it will benefit me in the future if I ever look to work in the energy industry.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to be more involved in their work. I wasn't busy all day everyday which was fine but I wish I had done more financial work while I was there.

Advice

I'd share to not count out any one job whether it is for an internship or full time. Make sure you think long and hard about what each job entails because you may never know how interested you are in something if you don't give it a chance.

Finance Co-Op

January - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The Co-Op program is a great opportunity for those who are looking for an internship opportunity that can continue when school starts back up. Supervisor was very flexible around school demands. It feeds directly to their Finance/Accounting leadership development program.

What I wish was different

A more developed Co-Op program, that touched other parts of the business or gave me opportunities to learn the bigger picture. It felt a bit like I was a temp worker.

Advice

Network internally, hiring decisions are made by managers and supervisors parallel to your own in a committee. So your boss may love you but if no one else knows you, good luck getting an FT offer.

Electric Power Distribution Engineering Co-op

July - August 2020 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

This was a virtual internship, and my advice is to be proactive to reach out to other people on your team, especially if you are not meeting them in person. I think I was sometimes too hesitant to ask for help or ask for things to do. I also found it helpful to reach out and have a "virtual hang-out" sort of meeting with a couple engineers on my team. It was good to just get to know them in a casual environment and gave me an opportunity to learn more about their work at DTE.
