Civil Engineer (Entry Level)

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Public Works Director, the Civil Engineer will be responsible for performing engineering activities related to field surveys, drafting, project planning, design, plan review, and inspection of both public and private sanitary sewer, water, streets, city facility, parks, and storm sewer improvements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Applies general engineering principles to the solution of specific engineering problems.
  • Corresponds with the public, contractors, developers, and public agencies as necessary via phone, email, mail.
  • Gathers information for inclusion in engineering reports and staff reports as needed.
  • Reviews proposed plans for compliance with City Ordinances.
  • Assists with site plan review for engineering, water, sanitary, storm and streets.
  • Assists with reviewing and evaluating proposals for consultant work.
  • Obtains civil and environmental permits with multiple agencies.
  • Writes and edits construction specifications and engineering reports.
  • Writes property descriptions for sales of land and easements for utilities.
  • Performs inspections on certain City projects.
  • Writes grant and funding applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field. Preferred: previous related internship work experience.

Licensing and Certification: Possess or have the ability to possess a Fundamentals in Engineering certification and/or the Engineering in Training certification. Under the guidance and support of our engineering team, the successful candidate must have the ability and desire to work towards taking the Professional Engineer exam. Must have (or be willing to obtain) a State of Michigan driver’s license.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of basic civil engineering principles, practices, methods, and materials.
  • Skilled in the use of office equipment and technology, including computers and related software (MS Word, Excel) and the ability to master new technologies.
  • Skilled in technical writing/communication.
  • Ability to work constructively and interact professionally with others, and handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to make accurate engineering calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas orally and in writing.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks, adjust to changing priorities and work within deadlines.
  • Ability to prepare plans and estimates of infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Salary/Benefits

The salary range is $60,000 - $75,000. The City of South Haven offers an extensive benefits package including:
