Coalmont has an immediate need for a motivated Electrical Engineer at our Birmingham, Alabama facility. This Engineer will join an expert design team to further develop an innovative motor and drive solution that redefines the standard of electrical propulsion and energy conversion in both the automotive and industrial industries.  

JOB DESCRIPTION:

As an Electric Machine and Drives Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the design, fabrication, and optimization of a newly patented electric machine concept. Your role will involve collaborating with senior Engineers and PhDs to further refine proof-of-concept designs, generate Matlab/Simulink motor models and drive system control algorithms, implement acceptable testing procedures, engineer power and control circuits, design and procure custom printed circuit boards, and generate comprehensive and professional design documentation. The Electric Machine and Drives Engineer will be fully integrated into the motor design team and will have an immediate impact on the continued efforts to develop a fully functional and revolutionary motor with the intent to bring to market.

The Electric Machine and Drives Engineer will collaborate with world-renowned motor experts to conceptualize, design, and bring to fruition a groundbreaking new type of motor. This innovative motor technology has the potential to revolutionize the industry, reshaping the way electrical motors are perceived and utilized. Your role in this transformative project will be instrumental in driving forward advancements in motor design and engineering, paving the way for new possibilities and applications across various industries. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and simulate electric machines and drives using advanced software tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS, and PLECS.
  • Develop control algorithms and firmware for motor drives to achieve precise speed control, torque regulation, and energy efficiency.
  • Conduct performance analysis, testing, and validation of electric machines and drives.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and project managers.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in electric machine design, power electronics, and motor drive systems.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

Bachelor, Master, PhD degree in electrical engineering, or a related field from an ABET accredited program.

Solid understanding of electric machine principles, including AC, DC, permanent magnet, and synchronous machines. 

Can demonstrate an understanding of drive design, control algorithms and regulators.

Proficiency in modeling and simulation tools for electric machines and drives, including:

  • MATLAB
  • SIMULINK
  • AutoCAD
  • ANSYS
  • PLECS

Experience with motor control techniques, power electronics, and digital signal processing.

Experience in Programming embedded controller(s): 

  • SpeedGoat
  • STM Electronics
  • Texas Instruments

Experienced Programmer in Higher Level Coding Languages:

  • C
  • C++
  • Python

Self-Starter with attention to detail and a strong motivation to complete projects on schedule.

Proven leadership abilities and is willing to contribute as needed to the benefit of the team.
Creative problem solver.

Solid fundamental Electrical Engineering knowledge, with formal training in:

  • Electromagnetics
