Control Systems Engineer

The role will consist of modifying and developing the control software, wiring schematics and documentation for the company’s range of standard and bespoke, high-speed packaging machinery; whilst also providing support to the service department, both remotely and on site across the US, Canada, and Mexico. As the company continues to grow, the job holder will develop skills and gain experience with a view to work autonomously in a Control Systems Engineering role.

TROUBLESHOOTING, INSTALLS, PROJECT SUPPORT 

  • Visit customer sites during complex installations, supporting the service and projects departments 
  • Perform software modifications at customer site to PLCs, HMIs, Servo motion control, safety logic, along with small amounts of mechanical assembly and wiring 
  • Third party equipment integration using relays/ethernet communications 
  • Troubleshooting remotely with service engineers and occasionally with customers directly 
  • Resolve programming snags reported by the machine assembly department 
  • Work with the projects department and customers to understand requirements 
  • Communicate equipment requirements to Proseal UK systems department to minimize rework in the US  
  • Support our on-call technician with systems related issues, often outside of normal working hours 
  • Provide timely, accurate, and detailed visit reports  

ADMINISTERING SOFTWARE UPDATES, CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS, MODIFICATIONS

 

  • Review planning daily to ensure we are prepared for all upcoming jobs 
  • Communicate with planning to ensure systems requirements are clear 
  • Consult and maintain effective communication with design engineers, management, and customers to resolve issues in system, design, operation, and maintenance 
  • Amending circuit diagrams and software for modifications  
  • Setup our standard software to ensure all machines are up to date 
  • Programming PLC’s, HMI’s, servo motion control, safety controllers  

 

Job Requirements 

 

DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING, DOCUMENTATION, QUALITY 

  • Document software changes and updates in great detail 
  • Help to develop our control systems standard software 
  • Assist the machines department to thoroughly test the logic and systems functions 
  • Support the machines department with customer acceptance tests when necessary 
  • Create technical training documentation and procedures
  • Complete all safety-related training and follow all health and safety guidelines 
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, or related field preferred, high level of experience will be considered
  • 2 -4 years of experience in control systems and automation highly preferred
  • Willing to travel 50% of the time. Will occasionally be given short notice to travel to a customer site
  • Strong understanding of PLC ladder logic
  • Strong cause-effect analytical abilities to solve problems.
  • Must be able to pass prescreening requirements for the role
  • Valid United States Driving License with a good driving record
  • Valid Passport to travel outside the United States preferred
  • 2D CAD experience (DraftSight / AutoCAD preferred)
  • Familiarity with servo motors / motion control / robotics preferred
  • Strong IT and basic computer networking skills preferred
  • Knowledge of C# or similar programming language preferred
  • Experience in food packaging lines or similar preferred
  • Hands on mechanical experience is an advantage

Physical Requirements  

  • Work in climate-controlled, and non-climate-controlled factories and locations
  • Stand continuously for long periods of time, and work behind a desk
  • Wearing of safety clothing and equipment is required
  • Able to kneel, bend, crouch and climb ladders to access various parts of a machine
  • Physically able to stand / walk lift at least 75 lbs.

Work Environment

  • Working around machinery and forklifts
  • Will work in warehouses, farms, and various locations with temperatures varying in each location
