Undergrad Technical Intern - Materials Manufacturing

Overview
Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Responsibilities
Are you interested in learning about and helping to develop state-of-the-art approaches to metals manufacturing? The Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a student considering a career as a research technician for an internship assignment. This position requires someone who wants to be “hands on” with machinery and help develop innovative, sustainable processes to manufacture materials and components.

The position holder will be involved in manufacturing process development. These hands-on tasks may include setup of fixturing, assisting engineers and scientists in creating weld coupons or cold spray coupons, heat treatments of materials in furnaces, and other material processing steps. Additionally, the position holder will help test samples after they are processed to characterize their performance. The position will require documentation and communication of the results to engineers and scientists. The position will take direction from scientists, engineers, or technicians and follow established procedures. 

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a high school diploma /GED or higher.
  • Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university.
  • Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least 1 year of a technical associate degree program that is related to welding or manufacturing processes.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
The position holder will work in research laboratories, which are inherently hazardous working environments.  Exposure to mechanical hazards, chemicals, etc., are kept to a minimum and mitigated through the use of controls and the maintenance of a safety-conscious work environment.
