Engineering Technician, Mechanical Testing

This position is focused on supporting the development of new steel grades and coatings, as well as qualification of these materials for all products supporting the U. S. Steel Commercial Strategy.  This individual will have the primary responsibility of preparing and testing specimens to characterize welding performance and mechanical properties performance to provide critical data in support of product development.  The candidate must demonstrate the ability to use continuous improvement methodologies via the World Class Organization (WCO) that benefit their core area of responsibility, as well as the entire organization. Additional tasks will include routine maintenance of laboratory test equipment, and support activities that improve the Safety and Quality Program at the Automotive Research Center.  Above all, the individual is expected to be able perform all tasks safely in an industrial laboratory environment.  

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Following established quality and safety procedures
  • Support grade development testing of legacy grades and new grades
  • Operation of a fork truck to move pallets of steel up to and from vertical storage shelves
  • Operation of computer-controlled test equipment; tensile frames, bendability test frames, hole expansion, Rockwell hardness, vertical milling machine etc.
  • Operation of DC welder as well as preparing samples for metallographic examination of welded specimens
  • Operation of power tools such as punch presses, band saws, and power shears.
  • Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Willingness to learn new skills that support other labs when needed
  • Use 5S lean methodologies to ensure a high standard of housekeeping is maintained.


EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong preference for a two-year Associate Degree in Materials, Manufacturing, and/or Mechanical Engineering / Technology or 2 years of directly applicable experience are required
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and laboratory testing skill sets, including familiarity with the operation of computer-controlled machinery, and test/data logging equipment are required.
  • Familiarity with metrology, or laboratory instrumentation
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as with a team, as needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Focus on safety and environmental performance in laboratory and manufacturing environments.


WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work areas include office areas, high bay areas, and laboratory environments at Automotive Center; commercial sheet and tubular steel production facilities as required.
  • Must be able to comply with applicable safety requirements for both laboratory and manufacturing environments and with all corporate and plant safety training, regulations and policies.
  • Must be capable of moving and lifting materials and tools as required for safe completion of job tasks.
