NDE-MET Engineer

Overview:

The individual selected will apply their knowledge, skills, and experience in nondestructive evaluation/testing (NDE/NDT) and metallurgy on projects seeking to improve customer assets' safety, integrity, and life cycle costs. The individual will be mostly working for project managers of NDT and metallurgy types of projects but will report directly to the NDE-MET Resource Manager. The NDE-MET Engineer conducts testing and analysis, including identifying discontinuities and testing the metallurgical properties of various materials and components used in the railroad industry. Responsible for testing and evaluating the efficiency, characteristics, and performance of railroad components and materials, following applicable guidelines, specifications, standards, and customer contract requirements. Supports projects for various customers, including AAR, member railroads, government agencies, and commercial clients. In performing their work, the incumbent is expected to communicate amongst diverse project teams and project managers.

 

Primary Duties:

Performing NDE/NDT support functions as assigned, including:

  • Prepare and inspect metallurgical samples, including sample cutting, grinding, polishing, and etching. 
  • Perform rail flaw inspections on MxV Rail’s testing tracks.
  • Assist in the design of test plans.
  • Generate inspection reports.
  • Understand and operate NDT and metallurgy lab equipment.
  • Conduct NDE of track and mechanical components, including rails, welds, wheels, axles, couplers, yokes, side frames, bolsters, and airbag test fixtures, using visual testing (VT), liquid penetrant testing (LPT), eddy current (ECT), magnetic particle testing (MPT) and ultrasonic testing (UT) methods. 
  • Perform maintenance of equipment and supplies, along with checking inventory and placing orders for supplies.
  • Communicate with project team members regularly. Must understand and adhere to the budget, schedule, and scope of work for assigned tasks. 
  • Must work closely with other MxV Rail employees to ensure the highest quality work and product is delivered to customers.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two to four years of hands-on experience on jobs related to machine shop type of work, materials, and testing or NDE/NDT, with evidence of some formal training received.
  • In lieu of the above experience, a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with a focus on NDE/NDT or materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, produce high-quality results, and complete assignments on schedule and within the given budget.
  • Open to learning new skills in a hands-on technical environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in the efficient and safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in performing metallurgical and nondestructive evaluations.
  • Effective communicator with skills (or ability to learn skills) in data interpretation, data analysis, and reporting of technical information.
  • Demonstrable computer skills, with experience using Microsoft® Office products, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Colorado Class "R" Driver's License or ability to get it within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: 

In addition to the above, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • NDT Level I or II certification in VT, LPT, MPT, and UT.
  • Knowledge of the design of experiments and data collection (either through work experience or coursework).
  • Understanding of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) and Eddy Current Testing (ECT).
  • Knowledge of Ferrous Metallurgy and practical experience with Metallography and Microscopy techniques.

  • Environment: Work is performed in various environments, including an indoor office environment and industrial, laboratory, and/or railroad environments that may include uneven surfaces, such as ballast, stairs, heavy equipment and machinery, and loud noises. Work will frequently require standing, walking, and bending for long periods. Lifting, pulling, and/or pushing of items 30-50 pounds is required.
  • Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
  • Travel: Travel is required up to 15% of the time, depending on workload/program location(s).
