Plans Examiner

The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for a Plans Examiner. As part of the Community Development Department, this position will plan, organize, direct, and participate in the plan review process and permits operations of the Building Division workgroup; provides technical expertise in plan check review; participates in the management of departmental affairs; and may serve as Building Official in the latter's absence.

The starting salary range $77,420 - $89,623 will commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and participates in the plan review of building drawings and design documents for projects submitted to the Building Division.  
  • Supervises the permits operation of the Building Division to ensure the timely issuance of permits and the proper dissemination of information to the public. 
  • Meets with, consults and/or makes presentations to community groups, design professionals and representatives of local business to explain the functions, policies and operations of the section and to respond to questions concerning plan and permit submittals and code issues. 

Entry Requirements and Skills

High school diploma or GED and five (5) years of responsible experience in building plan review and inspection work.  A minimum of one year of lead or supervisory responsibility in construction or building division is highly desirable. A bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering or architecture from an accredited college or university may be substituted for three years of the required experience.  Or any combination of education and/or experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to achieve satisfactory job performance.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Commercial Building Plans Examiner and certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Commercial Building Inspector within one year from date of hire.
 
In addition, possession of ICC Certification as a Combination Plans Examiner and/or Combination Commercial Inspector and/or Combination Residential Inspector or equivalent certification from a recognized agency is highly desirable.  
 
Shall be able to obtain and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Iowa.
