The participant will assist with a variety of ongoing data collection and preservation efforts relating to the vegetation and ecological resources of Fort Laramie National Historic Site (FOLA). FOLA was established as a monument in 1938 and designated as a National Historic Site in 1960. The purposes of the park include preserving and interpreting the extensive historic and cultural resources for which the park is well known as well as the abundantly diverse natural resources including the protection corridor at the confluence of the Laramie and North Platte Rivers. Primary areas of emphasis for this position will be selected from projects based on the selected applicant’s strengths, experience, and interests. The selectee will be an integral member of the park’s resource team helping to achieve management goals for natural resources through research, monitoring, identifying and mapping of plant species. Additionally, they will aide in future monitoring efforts with cooperating NPS programs, assist with visitor outreach and education about the natural resources of the park, inventory unmapped areas and monitor previously mapped areas of the park. Opportunities may also exist to apply the participants specialized skills to related projects that have potential to benefit the park’s museum program through addressing needs of the park’s herbarium collection by collecting, pressing, and preserving plant specimens.
Compensation amounts:

– $1,100 – one time RT travel allowance

– $250 – weekly living allowance

– $60 – weekly commuting allowance (Combined with weekly living allowance)

– $800 – monthly housing allowance (5 months of housing)

– AmeriCorps eligible ($2,474 education award) at fulfillment of position requirements and 675 service hours

Please note, this position's start date is dependent on a fully executed agreement coming in prior to the start date. 
 

Training Provided: Hands on training in the practice and method of National Park Service(NPS) Natural Resource Management. Position will require individual to obtain state pesticide applicator license.
Educational/Recreational Opportunities: Natural resource training in a National Park unit. State Parks and reservoirs are close by and include camping, hiking and fishing opportunities.
