Product Safety Representative III

This Product Safety Representative role is an expert position within the Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs group of Group Innovation. This position is located in Pittsburgh, PA with the ability to have a flexible hybrid work option. The primary responsibility of this role is to maintain the safe use of Covestro products by providing leadership on product safety issues by following regulatory requirements and using industry-wide product stewardship functions.
Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Author safety data sheets (SDSs) and hazard warning labels in the SAP Environmental Health and Safety System (P1P) in compliance with U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Canada WHMIS 2015, Mexico GHS, and other applicable regulations and standards as required for Covestro product lines including the GHS (Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals);
  • Assure compliance with OSHA, Department of Transportation (DOT), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), State Right-to-Know Laws, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, Canadian DSL, Mexico EHS  and harmonized tariff classifications of chemicals for NA as they apply to Covestro products and their uses;
  • Monitor for changes in regulations such as (OSHA, DOT, TSCA, State Right-to-Know Laws, RCRA, CERCLA, and EPA regulations, Canadian DSL, Mexico EHS  and harmonized tariff classifications of chemicals for NA as they apply to Covestro products and their uses), communicate information to PSRA and BE’s as appropriate, and as needed provide a management plan to address these changes;
  • Participate in reviewing health and safety literature and assist in product stewardship and product advocacy activities including position papers;
  • Respond to customers concerning various regulations and health and safety needs;
  • Partner with business entities from a product safety perspective, such as with new product launches, on-going product stewardship issues and activities, and sustainability initiatives/efforts;
  • Participate in new product use reviews from a PSRA perspective and risk characterization projects for new applications, as needed
  • As requested, assist with regulatory activities and Covestro implementation/response strategies
  • As needed, participate in various projects supporting PSRA, the BEs, or production sites, such as GHS and PLM (product life cycle management systems).
  • Review and provide feedback on technical data sheets, press releases, and other documents from the EHS perspective.
  • Process product composition changes and substance hazard classification changes.  Update SDSs and labels as appropriate and inform BEs and customers as appropriate. As requested, participate in ACC Responsible Care Product Safety Code requirements through ensuring we do business with suppliers who have a well-established environmental, safety and health program.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of experience, Master’s degree in science (e.g. biology, chemistry), engineering, or other health-related field preferred
  • Professional registration and/or certifications
  • Technical knowledge in hazard communication, toxicology, exposure/risk characterization, effective presentation skills, and chemical identification are necessary.
  • Knowledge of current regulatory requirements under such statutes and regulations as the following is highly preferred: OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, Toxic Substances Control Act, transportation classification, State Right-to-Know Laws, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act.
  • Specialized problem-solving skills are needed for evaluation of hazard and exposure data to do risk characterization.
  • Excellent presentation (both written and oral) and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both up and down the organization and to relate proactively with customers and other companies and industry, governmental and non-governmental organization representatives.
