Materials Engineering Intern - Summer 2023

Provide the Materials Engineering group with hands-on, technical and administrative support of Materials Engineering functions. A basic understanding of metallurgical principles is desired, including material properties, materials testing, phase transformation and heat treating. Attention to detail and thoroughness of work are critical. This position reports to the Materials Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Hands-on heat treatment of tooling and R&D material.
  • Perform & document furnace temperature uniformity surveys.
  • Hands-on and administrative support of materials-related projects/studies/investigations including forging, thermal processing, plating, corrosion and cleaning processes.
  • Interpret/understand material, processing and testing specifications/standards.
  • Ability to research and understand metallurgical phenomena.
  • Materials-related data analysis and database creation/management.
  • Material sample inventorying.
  • Possible metallurgical laboratory support.
  • Work with Materials, NDE, Quality, Purchasing, Floor Supervisors and Personnel, and Suppliers as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Enrollment into a Materials Science and Engineering BS program.
  • Attention to detail and self-motivation to complete tasks thoroughly.
  • Strong verbal skills and clear, concise compositional skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
