Packaging Engineering Intern

The Company:
Since 1948, Bob Evans Farms (BEF), Bob Evans Farms (bobevansgrocery.com) has been delivering farm-fresh goodness—delicious, quick-to-table farm fresh foods sold in retail stores throughout the country. The company manufactures and distributes a variety of high-quality, convenience-oriented products under the Bob Evans, Owens, Egg Beaters and Simply Potatoes brand names. Today, the company is the leading seller of refrigerated dinner sides including mashed potatoes and macaroni & cheese, liquid egg products and refrigerated breakfast potatoes. BEF is also a leading producer and distributor of over sixty varieties of sausage and bacon products, frozen handheld breakfast items and other convenience foods. 

In September of 2017, the company was acquired by Post Holding Company, Post Holdings. Within Post, BEF is part of the Refrigerated Retail division. Other divisions of Post include Post Consumer Brands (cereal), Weetabix, Michael Foods, and 8th Avenue Food & Provisions. Post has aggressive growth plans for BEF, highlighted by the recent deployment of capital to support innovation, marketing and manufacturing.

Position Overview:
 
The Packaging Engineer intern will work with our Sr. Packaging Engineer on company initiatives including compiling and uploading our packaging specification into the Specright platform, creating a database of packaging tests that should be part of our product development process, as well as our finished product packaging specifications. The intern will be responsible for conducting small tests, analyzing and evaluating the data, and help in formulating conclusions.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Validate packaging performance through lab testing and plant line trials, as needed
  • Gather packaging specifications and manage database for storage and maintenance
  • Create organize and maintain pallet patterns via TOPS software
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners for identification of packaging solutions through to successful commercialization
  • Troubleshoot existing packaging as needed, recommending technical solutions
  • Coordinate packaging samples for internal and external needs as required
  • Incorporate business needs into technical judgements
  • Work in laboratory, pilot plant and manufacturing scale environments
  • Analyze design/data components
  • Manage multiple assignments/ tasks
  • Travel to multiple BEF plants/locations

  • Candidate is working towards a bachelor’s degree in the related discipline
  • Sound written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work within teams and maintain professional composure in a dynamic work environment that often requires management and completion of multiple tasks
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and ability to apply logical/critical thought processes when developing solutions
  • Ability to display a positive business presence with management and external personnel
  • A strong interest in the CPG industry, a plus
  • Working knowledge of CAPE or TOPS palletization software
  • Ability to analyze technical packaging drawings and specifications
