Materials Engineer

Dana is a global leader in the supply of highly engineered driveline, sealing, and thermal-management technologies that improve the efficiency and performance of vehicles with both conventional and alternative-energy powertrains. Serving three primary markets – passenger vehicle, commercial truck, and off-highway equipment – Dana provides the world's original-equipment manufacturers and the aftermarket with local product and service support through a network of nearly 100 engineering, manufacturing, and distribution facilities.
 
This position will be responsible for materials engineering support of product design, specification, and launch of electric vehicle driveline technologies, motors, and inverters. Additionally, this position includes some materials testing, failure analysis, report writing, and report review. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
 
Responsibilities:
  • Perform product design and manufacturing technical reviews for new program launches.
  • Review and evaluate engineering change requests.
  • Perform supplier and internal manufacturing process technical reviews for new product and process/supplier changes.
  • Provide materials engineering support for requests from engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers.
  • Create and maintain materials and process specifications.
  • Lead and support material and process related projects.
  • Interpret test results, write reports, and effectively communicate with cross-functional teams.
  • Responsible for completing other engineering projects as assigned.
  • Apply current and new material and process related technology as it relates to Dana products.
  • Support material testing and failure analysis of components submitted to the Metallurgical Laboratory.
  • May include some sample preparation and metallographic examination, hardness testing, chemical analysis, photo documentation, non-destructive evaluation, as well as mechanical and performance testing.
  • Coordinate outsourced testing as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
 
Qualifications Desired:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or Welding Engineering. May consider equivalent education and experience.
  • 2-5 years of experience in materials engineering and manufacturing.
  • Electric motor and electric vehicle product experience a plus.
  • Experience in failure analysis, including some use of a scanning electron microscope preferred.
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, elastomers, adhesives, welding, paints, corrosion, and lubricants preferred.
  • Knowledge of hardness testing, tension and compression testing, fatigue testing, corrosion testing, chemical analysis, and microscopic evaluation techniques.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new process and product knowledge.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and the ability to read design prints.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to professionally interface with people from all levels of the organization, both inside and outside Dana.
  • Good written, verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, and ability to meet urgent deadlines.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency using Windows operating system, Microsoft Office products, and other software applications
  • Able to travel occasionally.
  • Able to work occasional overtime during the week and on weekends when needed.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs., and to stand for approximately 50 % of the time.
