Intern, Bio Plant Engineering

Summary 
 
This application is for a 12-week internship role from June - August 2023. Resume review begins in January 2023. 
 
The Bio Plant Engineering team supports the utility and facility equipment associated with Biogen’s RTP biologics manufacturing site - including troubleshooting, capital projects, and continuous improvement.  All activities take place in a GMP facility, so knowledge of that environment is helpful. An ideal candidate would have some familiarity with utility systems (purified water, clean steam, HVAC air handlers, and/or biotech processes), have an ability to read and interpret engineering drawings (P&IDs, Specifications etc.), be able to solve problems with logical thinking and perform activities across several small projects concurrently.  Excellent organization and communication skills are a strong benefit to the role.  
 
In this role, you will have the opportunity for cross functional engineering collaboration with a range of engineering activities as well as learning of utility unit operations at a biopharma manufacturing site, including hands-on activities with plant engineering systems at the site.  
 
Position Description 
Detailed description of role including but not limited to: 
  • Work under the supervision of a technically focused Engineer within Biogen’s Plant Engineering group. 
  • Working with engineering team members to support process & mechanical equipment projects. 
  • Provide support in the implementation of projects that drive continuous improvement and quality standards. 
  • Perform reliability assistance in preventative maintenance systems such that reliability and predictive maintenance are taken into account when implementing new projects. 
Example projects may include: 
  • Support process or mechanical team engineer on the progress of a system build or improvement.  Examples could include a biowaste inactivation system, Air Handler modification, installation or upgrade of a clean utility system. 
  • Support equipment/capital improvement projects, coordinating technical documentation and engineering drawings, equipment troubleshooting 
  • Review technical documentation including weld certifications, shop drawings, panel schedules, and testing protocols. 
 
Qualifications: 

  • Proficient in MS office programs & Technical Writing 
  • Self-Starter with good communication skills and willingness to learn new skills  
  • Attention to detail is important for documentation and design reviews. 
  • Experience testing or operating industrial equipment preferred but not expected. 
 
To participate in the Biogen Internship / Co-Op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date 
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university 
 
Education 
Mechanical, Chemical/Biological, Industrial or Electrical Engineering Major (Jr +) preferred.
