This position functions as lead scientist in the PulseNet/Whole Genome Sequencing Unit and performs highly technical duties under limited supervision. This position's duties include whole genome sequencing and molecular subtyping on foodborne and pathogenic enteric bacteria, maintaining inventory and supplies for testing, assisting with grant application objectives and budget management, and assisting other Units in the Microbiology Section as needed. Training of subordinate staff is also performed. This position serves as primary contact for WV with CDC's PulseNet Program and requires certification by CDC to be approved to perform PulseNet activities.

Minimum Qualifications
Training: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a biological, microbiological, chemical, or environmental science, medical technology, molecular biology, forensic sciences, or related field.
AND
Experience: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid laboratory experience that is clinical or environmental laboratory experience that produces a test result.
OR
Substitution:  Graduate course work in one of the areas as described above from a regionally accredited college or university may substitute at the rate of one (1) year of experience for every fifteen (15) semester hours of education.

Special Requirement: For positions that involve processing and analysis of human specimens and/or the generation or interpretation of laboratory results that may be used in the diagnosis or treatment of a disease or condition in humans, the incumbent must have or be eligible for licensure as a WV Clinical Laboratory Practitioner as required by 64 C.S.R.§57.
