Postdoctoral Research Associate - Composites Innovation Group

Overview: 
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who will focus on manufacturing of high temperature materials for advanced manufacturing of composites. We are seeking a postdoc with polymer chemistry and formulation experience, as well composite technology. If selected, you will be expected to collaborate amongst groups focusing on basic and applied research in various fields applicable to the current projects. This position resides in the Composites Innovation Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
 
As part of our research team, you will be among team members based at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) first facility established to provide affordable and convenient access to R&D expertise, facilities, and tools to facilitate rapid adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing and advanced composites manufacturing. The candidate will help aid the effort to develop specialized composites for strategic energy applications, especially for building technologies and equipment. You will perform the fundamental science to improve materials selection and processing of polymer composites with traditional and additive manufacturing platforms of various and numerous kinds; publish original peer reviewed research articles; and supervise students, and technicians.
 
Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Work to link information to improve research derived at the processing and advanced characterization levels
  • Research high temperature materials for advanced and additive manufacturing in building technologies and equipment applications
  • Able to perform compression molding and formulation of silicone materials
  • Develop formulations for Sheet Molding Compounds (SMC) and prepreg materials
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years
  • A minimum of 2 years research experience of high temperature composites processing
  • Experience in the following areas: composites processing, additive manufacturing, compression molding, SMC, direct ink write, advanced composite characterization, and 3D characterization of materials
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing processes for composites
  • Experience with manufacturing of demonstration and prototypes articles
  • Excellent heat transfer knowledge
  • Familiarity with building equipment technologies 
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
