Modeling Engineer

Position Summary
Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is a global technical enterprise, leading the discovery, development, and integration of affordable warfighting technologies for our air, space, and cyberspace force. We are looking for a qualified candidate to support on-base research efforts in support of the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. At the broadest level our research group plans, directs and conducts in house and extramural research and development of materials technologies with an emphasis on functional applications. This position is for a research scientist to work in the field of liquid crystalline components. These components hold promise for future Department of the Air Force applications in sensing for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as integrated photonic quantum information systems (QIS). The candidate will lead the synthesis, processing, and characterization of solutions, films, and devices comprising members of this material family. The candidate will collaborate with a cross-disciplined team of government, civilian, contractor, and industrial personnel. The team will consist of scientist in a variety of disciplines to determine the most valuable research directions and ways to improve the efficiency of technologies for our warfighters.
Azimuth Corporation is looking for a qualified research grade postdoctoral candidate with experience in the areas of optics and photonics to join a vibrant and active research effort relating to the design and optimization of optical metamaterials and metasurfaces to work with the Accelerated Materials Exploration and Design group at the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, OH.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate new and existing software resources for applicability to research areas of interest 
  • Utilize a range of both open source and closed source software on multiple operating systems and computing platforms, including local workstations, high-performance computing centers, and cloud computing resources 
  • Development of scientific computing software used in the design and exploration of optical materials.
  • Aid in the documentation and publication of internally developed software resources
  • Experience developing of cross-platform, open-source scientific software including the usage of distributed version controls systems, specifically git
  • Proficiency in AI/ML software packages such as scikit-learn, Tensorflow, PyTorch, Theano, and Keras
  • Proficiency in Python and C++; desired experience with scientific python packages including NumPy, SciPy, Matplotib, scikit, and pandas
  • Familiarity with parallel and GPU computing paradigms and frameworks e.g. MPI and CUDA
  • Proficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems (e.g. Ubuntu, Red Hat) including the use of a terminal environment and bash scripting
  • Familiarity with computational electromagnetics simulation
  • Capability to research, devise, and learn new techniques and technical topics
  • Excellent organization and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting
  • Ability to use Google Workspace (Google Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.) as well as Microsoft Office and Teams

Basic Qualifications
  • Masters or PhD: Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Optics, Computer Science, or a closely related science or engineering field
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Clearance Required: Applicants selected will be subject to a security clearance check and/or a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Physical Requirements / Travel
  • May travel ~10% to conferences, program reviews, industry meetings, or other collaborative events. Most or all travel would be CONUS (Continental United States).
  • Must be able to work in an office environment at a desk and computer using a keyboard and mouse; potential for remote work/work-from-home
  • Must be able to work in a lab environment
  • Must be able to lift or carry up to 25 pounds
