SRNL R&D Senior Scientist, Tritium Technologies

About Us:
Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multi-program laboratory applying state of the art science and practical, high-value, cost-effective solutions to complex technical problems to protect the nation. Located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS), the laboratory develops and deploys innovative technologies to address some of the nation’s environmental, energy, and national security challenges.

Situated on the outskirts of South Carolina, SRNL is located approximately 20 minutes from Augusta, Georgia (home of the annual Master’s Golf Tournament) and 30 minutes from Fort Gordon (home of the new US Army Cyber Command). The complex is one hour from South Carolina's Capital: Columbia, within three hours of Charleston's beaches, and just a couple of hours from Greenville/Spartanburg, SC. Aiken is known for its famous thoroughbred horses, southern hospitality, growing community, thriving school district, numerous parks and golf courses, great weather, spacious avenues, and historical large and impressive homes.

Roles & Responsibilities:
The positions, three (3), will perform research and development on current and next generation tritium processing technologies. The positions will also support the application of hydrogen isotope processing and separation to fusion energy systems including development of improved tritium extraction, hydrogen isotope separation, tritium/hydrogen permeation barrier development, and He-3 generation in fusion energy components. Positions require knowledge on gas separations and impurity removal strategies from gaseous streams. The ideal candidate(s) must also have extensive knowledge in catalysis, absorption, engineered materials, and surface science. Knowledge on spectroscopic techniques is highly desirable. Skills in the planning, hands-on execution, analysis, and presentation of experimental research are desired. The applicant will collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams to conduct the described technical work, as well as pursue independent research proposals and perform other duties as assigned. Publication in peer reviewed journals is expected.

Basic Education Qualifications :
Bachelors in applicable science or engineering discipline plus 10 years experience in materials characterization and modeling in lieu of preferred qualifications.
Other Required Qualifications :
Proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination or approved exemption authorization will be required for employment at SRNL. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications :
PhD in Chemistry, materials science, energy science or physics-related field. Experience in materials characterization and modeling is highly desirable.
