Engineer I - Transportation

Under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer (P.E.) and as a member of an engineering project team, this position will provide technical support in the development and design of road and highway projects. Your technical experience will be enhanced by your engagement in the activities and experiences planned for you - it’s the Pape-Dawson Way!

Here is what you can expect as your tasks and duties in this role:
  • Assist a Project Manager in the development and design of road and highway projects to include plans, specifications, and estimates
  • Consult with Project Manager in the review of detailed plans, specifications, and estimate of cost to ensure conformity with the project scope and design standards
  • Develop feasible design alternatives and compare significant parameters such as typical sections, horizontal and vertical alignments, right-of-way requirements and cost
  • Identify and analyze the principle design features and major design alternatives that satisfy a project’s purpose and need
  • Review design details, and coordinate technical recommendations, assess the cost-effective constructability of the project and generally evaluate the project
  • Produce detailed, final design plans, specifications and estimates in accordance with AASHTO, FHWA, TXDOT
  • Be present and willing to learn from anyone and everyone

Here is a short list of what is necessary to perform effectively in this role:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from an ABET accredited college or university; other degrees considered are agricultural, transportation and environmental engineering
  • Internship experience in roadway planning and highway design preferred, but certainly not required 
  • Eagerness to learn how to practically apply knowledge obtain from engineering degree coursework  
  • Basic knowledge of software used in Transportation design such as Microstation, is helpful but not expected. Use of the varying software will be obtained in the work environment 
  • Effective communications skills, both oral and written, for team collaboration and interpersonal relationships developed with clients and agency representatives
  • Ability to interact professionally with clients and all level of employees within an organization
  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with occasional overtime- sometimes you just have to be willing to work together and get the job done outside the normal business day 
  • Must be reliable and dependable- your team will be counting on you!
