Global Technology Co-op, Glass & Materials Science – Spring & Summer 2023

Scope & Impact:
As a part of O-I’s Co-op with Glass and Materials Science, you will learn our methodologies and approach to glass science. You will help advance various projects by providing lab analysis, facilitate pilot plant experiments, and support to several scientists and engineers on active Research & Development and operational support projects. Over time, you will become more independent and work to design, conduct, and assess your own small project in a clear, concise manner, while ensuring that the project can be continued by others. Your projects will support the advancement of glass packaging in the marketplace.
 
Your Co-op experience with O-I will provide challenge and broaden your exposure to our industry and our organization. As you continue to grow, you’ll take on more independent work, acquire a skill set that contributes to your group’s success, and help shape our future. The co-op is expected to run for 7 months beginning either January through July and will be located at our Global headquarters in Perrysburg, OH.
 
Reporting Relationships:
The position reports to the Global Glass & Materials Science Discipline Leader.
 
During the co-op you’ll:
 
  • Work independently with occasional guidance from staff scientists and engineers in a very active lab environment.
  • Develop your skills by interfacing regularly with Lab Technicians, Glass Scientists, Quality Managers, Project Engineers, and Production Staff.
  • Learn the fundamentals of glass science research by preparing samples, running basic experiments, and accurately reporting data.
  • Learn to use analytical lab tools.
  • Apply your problem solving skills and knowledge of general lab practices to support research initiatives.
  • Participate in a dynamic learning experience. 
  • Gain exposure to several different projects enabling the future of O-I.
  • Develop skill in designing, conducting and analyzing an independent project.
 
The co-op participants should have:
  • Natural curiosity and a willingness to learn
  • Be dedicated to following safe practices in a lab and pilot plant environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments to meet objectives with strong attention to detail
  • High level of motivation and ability to work independently
  • Fine motor skills and manual dexterity required to cut small pieces of glass
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Commitment to relocation (Perrysburg, OH)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; able to interact with all levels of the organization including management and non-technical staff
 
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Glass Science, Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering or a related field. (Junior or Senior status preferred).
  • Minimum of one general Chemistry Lab. Additional lab courses preferred. 
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis (O-I does not sponsor working visas for internships or co-ops).
