Civil Engineering Internship

The Somat Internship Program will take you out into the field where you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of civil, construction, environmental and geotechnical engineering under the guidance of knowledgeable engineering professionals. With each day, you will gain a better understanding of the planning, design, and construction administration necessary for small to large-scale infrastructure projects. Typical projects include water resources management, transportation upgrades for roadways, bridges and airfields, underground utilities and private development. You will learn the processes involved in laboratory testing, engineering inspection and quality acceptance testing of construction materials, design engineering and analyses, and the processes involved in performing site geotechnical investigations of soil, rock, and groundwater.

You will receive the training needed to ensure your time in the field sets you on the right path to becoming a well-rounded civil engineer, with a thorough understanding of the design, management and construction involved to successfully bring a design project to life. We can guarantee that your time and effort will be beneficial towards your goal of a successful engineering career!
Tasks in the office and the field include, but are not limited to:
  • Testing and reporting on specific aspects of construction works in progress, such as concrete pours; reinforcing steel placement, drainage pipe placement, etc.;
  • Performing in-place nuclear density testing to monitor engineered fill material compliance with project compaction specifications;<
  • Monitoring bituminous pavement placement operations and performing in-place nuclear density testing to monitor pavement compliance with project specifications;
  • Monitoring Portland cement concrete placement operations and performing appropriate standard field tests and molding compressive strength test specimens;
  • Developing, planning and overseeing geotechnical field investigations;
  • Performing laboratory testing of soil and other construction materials;
  • Preparing reports for documentation of field and laboratory data; and
  • Preparing engineering analyses such as foundation designs, stability analyses, development of geotechnical design parameters for earth retention and groundwater control
