PROGRAM DESCRIPTION      
The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community. A major focus of the CRTP is the NCI RAS Initiative with the goal to discover new therapeutic interventions against RAS-driven cancers. As part of the RAS Initiative, the Protein Expression Laboratory (PEL) generates protein reagents to support internal and external RAS-related research. PEL staff utilize a variety of cutting-edge protein production methods including expression in a wide variety of host platforms to generate high-quality protein reagents used for structural biology and drug discovery.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Carry out experiments, under the review of a scientist, in areas of cloning and nucleic acid production
  • Perform experiments using Gateway recombinational cloning to generate novel plasmid DNA reagents
  • Generate miniprep and maxiprep DNA, bacmid DNA, and other DNA reagents for downstream protein production
  • Perform quality control on DNA samples
  • Participate on project teams, present data and discuss experimental results
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
This position may be filled with a Research Associate I or a Research Technician, commensurate with the selected candidates experience.
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a (CHEA) bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or another field closely related to biomedical research. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by a company-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States
  • Research Associate I - In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of related experience
  • Research Technician - No experience necessary with a Bachelor's degree; 4 years of biomedical experience can be substituted for the degree
  • Ability to handle multiple scientific projects with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:  
  • Prior experience with DNA technologies (PCR, cloning, large-scale plasmid preparation)
  • Familiarity with bacterial cell culture
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and FileMaker software
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
