Postdoctoral Appointee - Biological and Chemical Sensors

What Your Job Will Be Like:
Would you be interested in joining a dynamic team that solves complicated issues for national security?
We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to help design and conduct environmental testing to evaluate material performance in challenging environments, such as thermal vacuum, radioactive and high temperature. The selected applicant would partner with subject matter experts in other fields including electrochemistry, physics, and engineering, to propose a rational basis of understanding of phenomena for novel materials.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Plan, synthesize (chemically or electrochemically), and characterize novel organic and inorganic compounds and nanomaterials
  • Follow the scientific method in addressing specific questions related to the use of new materials in critical applications
  • Communicate and document findings in reports and peer-reviewed journals
  • Work both independently and in a team environment
  • Mentor undergraduate and/or graduate interns in a R&D setting
Qualifications We Require:
  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or related field, and Bachelor’s degree in STEM
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced through a record of scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

  • Experience in the preparation and purification of organic/inorganic compounds, nanomaterials, and polymers
  • Experience with electrochemical synthesis and electroanalytical methods
  • Experience working with radioactive materials
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience in characterization techniques including multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, TEM, SEM, TGA/DSC, UV-Vis, FT-IR, and XRD
  • Proven ability to interact with all members of the team, strong documentation and organizational habits, and communication methods that enable cooperation and success within a dynamic and complex work environment
  • Background in designing/building custom laboratory equipment
  • Programming experience (MATLAB, Python, C++ or similar)
  • CAD software experience (Solidworks, Pro-E or similar)
  • Experience working with DAQ systems and basic PID/Arduino controller programming
  • Demonstrated initiative and a willingness to take on considerable individual responsibility

The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based system for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia's MESA facility. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development. Security Clearance:
