Chemical Technician

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

Primary Functions:
AIS provides professional and technical support to the Milford Laboratory, a world-renowned aquaculture research NOAA lab. One subject of research at this lab is to investigate the potential effects of climate change on shellfish. AIS is seeking a chemical technician to provide bench work support to multiple climate change related projects. This position is laboratory based in Milford, CT with travel to Barnstable County, MA. In this position, the technician will work closely with dedicated NOAA scientist under established standard operating procedures (SOP). This position will include fieldwork and occasional work on weekends. This is an excellent opportunity for an early career chemist interested in climate change.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Analyze samples on a spectrometer, elemental analyzer, and flow cytometer using SOP.
  • Analyze dissolved inorganic carbon samples that may contain merchloric chloride
  • Perform routine pH and alkalinity measurements.
  • Follow standard operating protocols for washing glassware using a hydrochloric acid water bath.
  • Perform routine standard operating protocols for making standard solutions, reagents, and other chemical solutions as needed for sample analysis.
  • Understand safety procedures in the laboratory, handle chemicals, do basic chemical safety, correctly label chemicals and chemical hazardous waste and dispose of chemical reagents in compliance with state regulations.
  • Conduct routine quality control procedures on measurements for all analysis.
  • Run determinations for nutrients in seawater, which may include ammonia, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, and silica.
  • Follow standard operating procedures for preparing filters for biodeposition.
  • Look at phytoplankton and bivalve larvae under a microscope and count bivalve larvae
  • Clean, wash, and maintain bivalves for ocean acidification experiments according to standard operating procedure.
  • Follow standard operating procedure of biodeposition method, total suspended material (TSM) and respiration
  • Use microbalances and macrobalances according to the standard operating procedure
  • Identify when supplies are running low and report them to supervisor/team leader of the project.
  • Be able to work independently.
  • Provide detailed laboratory notebooks of sample analysis when requested.
  • Work with potentially toxic/hazardous chemical in a safe manner according to laboratory safety procedures.
  • Work on a boat to collect water, sediment, or live organism samples and work in a glove box if necessary for sample analysis.
  • Work with centrifuges according to standard operating procedure.
  • Graph data, determine means, standard deviation, standard error, precision, and accuracy of data
  • Combust samples and use a grinding and sieve method for sediment samples according to standard operating procedures.

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on employee’s availability and fishing effort. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of relevant experience
  • Candidates must be comfortable with basic chemistry lab skills and utilizing some hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde and merchloric chloride
  • Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Be able to drive

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with ocean acidification research

Travel:
  • Travel anticipated to Barnstable County for a duration of 1 week may occur monthly.
