Materials Lead Engineer (TE3)

The Opportunity
WSDOT is eager to hire an engineering professional looking to advance their career to serve as our next Materials Lead Engineer. This position will help ensure that assigned projects will be built within scope, schedule, and budget, and the contractors will receive timely and fair compensation. As the Materials Lead Engineer, you will ensure that materials incorporated in the project are tested properly. This supervisory role will also inspire, motivate, develop, and support a team of eight engineers and technicians in alignment with WSDOT’s mission and strategic plan. You will play a vital role in WSDOT's successful delivery of major construction projects, maintaining public confidence and helping the public travel safely throughout the state.
 
What to Expect
This position will work in the office, field, and the materials lab. Therefore, work will be conducted near heavy traffic, equipment and in areas with uneven terrain. 
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Materials Lead Engineer will:
  • Mentor, coach, and train direct reports, performing timely performance evaluations, and otherwise develop team members. 
  • Oversee transmittal of construction project control samples, processing requests for material source approvals, requests for subcontractor approvals and other required reports involving shop drawings, material certifications and catalog cuts.
  • Communicate with internal staff and stakeholders in resolving construction issues and contractor requests. 
  • Prepare cost estimates and negotiate contractor requests for information. 
  • Perform plan review on various highway related projects that are in the design phase. 
  • Attend meetings related to construction projects. 
  • Coordinate and track material testing to ensure tests are being conducted to meet WSDOT standards. 
  • Oversee the laboratory equipment and inventory. 
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent experience in construction inspection, materials testing, or construction administration.
  • Certified WSDOT General Inspector or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ACI concrete testing, WAQTC and WSDOT testing methods.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods relative to the documentation and construction of transportation projects.
  • The ability to express complex concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Strong mathematics skills and the ability to solve engineering problems of varying complexity.\
  • Possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: 
  • One or more years of experience directly supervising two or more technical/engineering staff.
  • One or more years of experience in roadway related contract administration.
  • Experience in testing concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and compaction.
  • Three years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.

  • In additional to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
