Metallurgical Engineer

The Technical Ceramics business of Morgan Advanced Materials engineers high performance functional and structural ceramic materials, components and sub-assemblies to address customer-specific technical challenges.
The business employs advanced materials science and applications expertise to produce parts that enhance reliability or improve the performance of its customers’ products. Major Responsibilities:
 
Interested in Physical Metallurgy and Brazing with an aptitude to learn and improve the process required to manufacture vacuum-grade precious-metal braze alloys. A desire to see how your product is applied at various customers. Alloying, casting, rolling, heat treatment, drawing, stamping, testing and atomizing. Perform vacuum and hydrogen brazing for metal-metal and active braze alloys, ceramic to metal bonding. Interface with customers by assisting the sales team to understand their need and provide solutions. Join a pioneer of precious-metal and active braze alloy development and a well-respected producer of aerospace and medical grade alloys for over 50 years.
Essential Functions:
  • Learns all key metallurgical processes, including inputs and operating parameters, involved with precious metal alloy production. Utilize this knowledge to push process improvements, which will take many forms
  • Become and act as a subject matter expert for all metallurgical related production issues
  • Take on and carry through to completion, corrective and improvement projects in production
  • Proposes and evaluates the new equipment and processes
  • Own the new product development role, to see that new jobs are properly technically reviewed, manufactured and approved by quality
  • Assists in testing and quality aspects of braze alloy production
  • Directs the design, development, and/or improvement of manufacturing / brazing processes for an assigned area
  • Build rapport with the shop floor, to promote learning/teaching in both directions both technical and safety focused
  • Interaction with customers internal/external for technical support and understand needs/perceptions
  • Assist commercial team in preparing proposal for customers, including costing and project planning
  • Performs work with a safety mindset, including regular safety audits.
  • Keeps abreast of current product developments and trends in areas of expertise, willingness to attend technical conferences and tradeshows
  • Actively identifies new areas for learning and takes advantage of learning opportunities
Minimum Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (MS or PhD preferred) in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Science, metallurgical focus preferred.
  • Understanding of metals-ceramic phase diagrams will be highly desirable.
  • Three years’ experience in industry, aerospace or medical industries preferred. Worked in quality system-controlled manufacturing (AS9100, ISO9001).
  • Experience with vacuum systems, inductive and resistive furnaces, rolling equipment, wire drawing, atomizing, brazing and other equivalent experience.
  • Experience in precious metal vacuum brazing is preferred
  • Must be hands-on. Willingness to dive in, figure out the issue and fix it
  • Must have good inter-personnel skills with a variety of personalities, ability to communicate from shop floor level through direct management to upper management.
  • Must have interest in spending time on shop floor.
  • Detailed oriented and the ability to arrive at decisions using data. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Solid works, GD&T, and Project Management.
