PhD Metallurgical/Materials Engineer (5235)

We are currently seeking a Metallurgical/Materials Engineer for Materials & Corrosion Engineering Practice in Phoenix, AZ. Phoenix is home to Exponent’s Test and Engineering Center (TEC) that supports a wide variety of sophisticated and complex test programs. In this role you will work as part of a team conducting metallurgical, materials, and failure analyses to assist Exponent’s clients across multiple industries.

We are looking for someone who is hands-on with the ability to support fieldwork, testing, and metallurgical/materials analysis, as well as someone who is motivated to advance professionally and ultimately develop and grow their consulting practice within Exponent. You will be required to analyze and interpret data to create technical presentations and reports which will be used to inform client decisions. Your responsibilities will include communicating effectively with other engineers and technicians, managers, clients, and non-technical staff as well as conducting failure analyses, planning and executing laboratory tests, field inspections, and metallurgical/materials analysis and testing.

You will be responsible for:
  • Conducting failure analyses, experimental testing, field inspections, and engineering analysis
  • Overseeing metallurgical/materials laboratory analyses including microscopy, mechanical testing, materials properties characterization, metallography, and chemical analysis
  • Reviewing and analyzing documentation and diverse data sets to draw conclusions and develop opinions
  • Actively solving technical and logistical problems in a fast-paced environment
  • Preparing written technical reports and presenting findings to diverse audiences

You will have the following skills and qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering
  • Education, background, or experience in a complimentary engineering field such as: welding, mechanical, vehicle/automotive, battery, electrical, biomechanics
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to synthesize and present technical information both verbally and in written reports
  • Attention to detail and a proven dedication to quality and accuracy
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, taking initiative and finding ways to contribute
  • Versatile and proactive in engaging with others, interested in working on projects outside of metallurgy/materials, ability to adapt knowledge to new contexts and work outside of core areas of expertise
  • Experience in designing, constructing, and performing tests in a laboratory or field environment
