Post Doc Research Associate - Battery Materials & Systems

Overview
Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Responsibilities
The Battery Materials & Systems Group within the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has an opening for a Post-Doctorate Research Associate position, aimed at synthesis and characterization of energy storage materials in all-solid-state battery and Li battery. This position entails working with collaborative multidisciplinary teams of materials scientists on the solid-state electrolyte design, synthesis, cell performance and fundamental understandings. Knowledge and experience of material synthesis, solid-state battery, lithium-sulfur battery, advanced characterization, battery assembly and test will be preferred to consider. The candidate in material, chemistry, chemical engineering background is encouraged. The candidate will also prepare reports and manuscripts for publication.
  • Applies basic theories to well defined tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Requires conceptual knowledge of scientific or engineering theories, practices and procedures within specialization.
  • Receives instruction on required tasks and reports on time and on budget, while working under guidance from experienced staff.
  • Communicates the importance within the work team

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Solid training in chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical engineering or materials science.
  • Knowledge and experience of solid-state electrolyte and battery will be preferred to consider.
  • Demonstrated ability to work (hands-on) on battery assembly, test, and characterization.
  • Hands-on experiences on synthesis of solid electrolytes, sulfur cathode, liquid electrolytes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and safely.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills are required.
  • Candidates must have received a PhD (chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical engineering or materials science) within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
The research involves materials synthesis, organic solvents, flammable Li metal, and use of glove boxes.
