Project Engineer

Project Engineers manage design projects that may encompass new product development, sheet metal, plastic, injection molded, or cast parts, design for manufacturing improvements, process improvement, serviceability, or customer requests. In addition to design work, Project Engineers completes a variety of engineering project work that includes capital equipment specification and acquisitions that enhance our vertical integration strategy and improve the efficiency of our production areas. The Project Engineer would conceptualize new product ideas, develop engineering designs, prototype, schedule, plan, forecast, resource, manage and implement all of the technical activities to assure project accuracy and quality from project conception to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver production design and capital improvement projects from start-up through implementation (budget, schedule, plan, personnel, and report project status) for both internal and external customers. 
  • Formulate realistic parameters for each project, including design elements and implementation procedures and coordinate work internally and externally to ensure on-time completion of projects within budget.
  • Redesign existing products to keep the product line current with changing market demand.
  • Maximize efficiency through planning and active participation in the New Product Development process as the team leader or member to minimize production and development delays.
  • Effectively communicate with project owner and other project participants.
  • Pro-actively identify and implement cost reduction ideas and programs to meet the cost reduction goals of the department.
  • Plan, lead and participate on cross functional teams to launch products, resolve issues, support product improvements and develop engineering solutions through problem solving and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Oversee and guide the detailed construction of prototypes through the fabrication of the sheet metal parts and assemblies through Drafting and the Model Shop.
  • Review the overall progress of each project and provide the department manager with a detailed progress report to ensure on-time project completion.
  • Document product designs by preparing bills of materials, cost analysis, drawings and engineering change requests.
  • Develop the quality and production specifications for all equipment required for each project.
  • Work with the Technical Illustration team to develop work instructions for new equipment and/or new procedures.
  • Design, develop and oversee installation and startup of new assembly lines or subassembly areas using 2D DraftSight.
  • Work with suppliers to develop solutions and resolve quality issues by getting quotes and calculating return on investment for various projects.
  • Collect, compile and analyze data on manufacturing processes to identify opportunities to implement lean principles, improve safety, ergonomics, quality, productivity and production flexibility.
  • Work with all levels of manufacturing and varying skill sets to ensure manufacturability of new products, and to ensure all issues are resolved ahead of product launches.
  • Identify and supervise the selection of components to meet the design objectives of a product and to maximize component standardization.
  • Provide technical support to the Service Department when needed.
  • Regular and reliable attendance in the office is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering management, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or similar field required.
  • Three or more years related experience required.
  • Three or more years of experience in manufacturing or design engineering preferred.
  • Appliance design experience preferred.
  • Experience specifying, negotiating, purchasing and implementing major capital expense equipment preferred.
  • Sheet metal fabrication experience.
  • Lean manufacturing experience.
  • SolidWorks or other 3D Drafting experience.
  • Experience in material specifications for plastics, sheet metal, extrusion, casting and injection molding.
  • Advanced MS Office skills preferred.
  • Occasional travel both domestically and internationally as needed, approximately 5% or less.
  • Ability to lead others, obtain commitment from team members and achieve results through others.
  • Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.
  • An open minded, innovative engineer that will support the direction and policies of the company and provide a positive influence.
  • Strong time management skills including multitasking, prioritization, forward planning and adherence to deadlines with minimal supervision.
