Postdoctoral Research Associate - Condensed Matter Physics

Overview: 
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
 
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Materials and Chemistry Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  
 
Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Contribute to ongoing physical property research on nonproliferation-relevant materials
  • Contribute to the development and advancement of materials analysis instrumentation for actinide materials
  • Expand existing microscopy and spectroscopy workflows with modern data science approaches
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
 
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience handling, synthesizing, or working with actinide materials
  • Experience with atomic force microscopy and other scan probe microscopy techniques
  • Experience with materials analysis, including the use of a physical property measurement system, x-ray diffraction, and optical vibrational spectroscopy
  • Experience with data science approaches to materials data interpretation
  • Exposure to the use of theoretical methods such as density functional theory (DFT) for electronic properties and lattice dynamics
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
