Postdoctoral Research Associate - Condensed Matter Physics

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Materials and Chemistry Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Contribute to ongoing physical property research on nonproliferation-relevant materials
- Contribute to the development and advancement of materials analysis instrumentation for actinide materials
- Expand existing microscopy and spectroscopy workflows with modern data science approaches
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience handling, synthesizing, or working with actinide materials
- Experience with atomic force microscopy and other scan probe microscopy techniques
- Experience with materials analysis, including the use of a physical property measurement system, x-ray diffraction, and optical vibrational spectroscopy
- Experience with data science approaches to materials data interpretation
- Exposure to the use of theoretical methods such as density functional theory (DFT) for electronic properties and lattice dynamics
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
