Postdoctoral Research Associate - High Temperature Materials and Design

Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Mehanical Properties & Mechanics Group in the Materials Science & Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) by investigating the mechanical properties and behavior of structural materials, with a focus on elevated temperature damage mechanisms and on developing material design rules in support of the development of ASME Code rules for advanced structural components.

In this role, you will design and coordinate high temperature tests, effectively process and analyze large dataset from these tests, perform creep-fatigue damage evaluation and generate research reports and peer-reviewed journal papers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Design and coordinate mechanical testing to evaluate time and temperature dependent response of structural materials
  • Investigate mechanisms responsible for high temperature material cyclic deformation behavior
  • Perform creep-fatigue evaluations and creep rupture damage analyses
  • Actively participate in the development of ASME Code rules
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with team members to facilitate development of modeling and simulation platforms
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Basic Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field, completed within the last five years
  • Strong background in experimental mechanics, mechanical behavior of materials and failure analysis

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with big data processing and analytics
  • Experience in design of experiments and perform analysis to evaluate high temperature material damage mechanisms
  • Skills in advanced material characterization techniques such as high temperature digital image correlation and specialized mechanical testing
  • Skills in material microstructure analysis (SEM, EBSD)
  • Strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
