Materials Engineer

This position is responsible for providing high-level metallurgical knowledge and analysis in the Chemical and Metallurgical Laboratory at the global headquarters. The incumbent will coordinate competitive benchmarking, supplier approval testing and contribute to failure analysis investigations originating from both product field and test failures. Additionally, the person will act as a materials resource to others in the organization, assist in personnel training on appropriate laboratory equipment and assist or lead materials and process development projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
·      Lead department coordination of competitive benchmarking in support of Product Development. Act as gatekeeper for incoming analysis requests insuring adequate justification, background and priority. Provide deep insight regarding unique materials and processing differences divergent with known industry practices.
·      Lead department coordination of supplier approval testing in support of onboarding. In the future, may act as a point of contact from the Materials group to the Procurement group and supplier base for technical development.
·      Provide tactical support to the Laboratory team in the area of both test and field failure analysis. Provide expert opinion as to cause(s) for failure and recommendations for corrective action.
·      Originate and lead materials development projects with the object of evaluation and implementation of materials in new products and/or operating environments.
·      Write clear, concise and timely formal reports that include background, method(s), results, interpretation and opinion/recommendation. Reports are primarily directed to Modine personnel, but may also be forwarded to suppliers and customers. The report is the primary work product of the lab and is meant to disseminate actionable information to the organization.
·      Provide metallurgical guidance and support to the materials development team as needed.
·      Act as a technical and project lead in identification, specification and acquisition of new and/or replacement metallurgical laboratory equipment.
·      Contribute to SEM/EDS analysis team. Assist with maintenance of this and other key equipment in the metallurgical area.                    
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
·      Knowledge and experience with a diverse set of alloys (primarily aluminum, copper and stainless steel) with an understanding of process/structure/property relationships.
·      Knowledge of metal joining, particularly brazing, soldering and welding.
·      Experience in standard metallurgical/mechanical test methods including metallography, microstructure interpretation, digital imaging, tensile testing, Rockwell and microhardness.
·      Significant experience with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) including energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) for elemental analysis. Knowledgeable in system maintenance.
·      Demonstrated ability to coordinate a failure analysis and provide conclusions and recommendations, where applicable.
·      Able to both lead and participate in development teams related to the company’s products, materials, or processes.
·      Knowledgeable in standard manufacturing processes
·      Excellent technical communication skills (written and oral) with the ability to convey complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
·      Self-starter with excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks of varying complexity and priority.
·      A minimum of two years industry experience in materials testing and analysis.
 
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Materials Science required. 

 
TRAVEL:
Limited travel (5%) for occasional support of manufacturing facilities and supplier/customer visits.
