Sustainability Intern - Summer 2022

Buro Happold’s core offering of structural and MEP services, complemented by our suite of specialist services, enables us to push boundaries and achieve more. Our Sustainability & Analytics team represents key specialists at Buro Happold, and we collaborate across the US region in this team to gain breadth and depth across sectors, cities, and topics like net zero energy, embodied carbon, water conservation, zero waste, thermal comfort, and health and wellbeing. Our team are leaders in their respective topics, speaking at conferences like the AIA national conference, Greenbuild, and the international PLEA conference, and engaging in the industry with organizations like the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), the International Passive House Association (iPHA), and the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF). 

About the Role
You will be technically and creatively challenged on projects that include design support and innovation, high-performance strategies, materials research, energy, carbon, water and waste analysis and modeling, etc. You will work closely with sustainability and engineering staff to support research, presentations, analysis, and integrated design strategies. Teamwork and a collaborative approach are key, and the role requires strong communication skills and a passion to succeed with others.

  • Develop energy, carbon water and waste analysis, studying opportunities to reduce impact and resource consumption
  • Research of materials and innovative indoor air quality design strategies
  • Investigate preferred site strategies for stormwater management, external comfort, heat island reduction, improved air and acoustic quality, biodiversity and ecology, enhanced user experience
  • Assess renewable energy production feasibility and research viable technologies and available funding and incentive opportunities (e.g. solar PV, solar thermal, WTE, fuel cells)
  • Develop cutting edge design solutions which prioritize the efficient use of materials, energy and natural resources.
  • Assess feasibility of third-party rating tools and support in project guidance and documentation (e.g. LEED, WELL, Zero Carbon)
  • Research strategies focused on human health and wellbeing and social equity impacts

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Architecture with a focus in Sustainability
  • Coursework in Sustainability concepts (e.g. energy, carbon, water)
  • Coursework in HVAC design, heat transfer or thermodynamics
  • Experience using Revit is preferred
  • Graphic skills and experience using Adobe Creative Suite is preferred
  • Proven interest in the built environment
  • Ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible manner
  • Eagerness to learn and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
