Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Summary:
This position will be an internship for the Truck Systems Group within New Product Development. The position requires a strong technically-oriented individual with good communication, a strong ability to work on a team, and a genuine interest in hands-on engineering.
 
Our intern program is structured like any other design and implementation project within NPD. The engineering interns will be given a set of requirements and a delivery date. The engineers will evaluate the requirements, establish a schedule and conduct design reviews to track progress.
 
The engineer that would fit best in this position is hard working, detailed orientated, humble, honest, open-minded to opinions, and driven to succeed. A successful engineer in this role would always put the customer's needs first, and would be engaged in the work she or he completes. This engineer takes responsibility for mistakes and shares successes with the team, and strives endlessly for improvement. Lastly, the ideal candidate is dynamic and adaptable and is open to taking on new challenges every day.
 
Essential Position Duties:
  • Study product requirements and create functional requirements for system design.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for requested features before confirming functional requirements.
  • Development of mechanical systems including fabricated steel assemblies, structures, brackets, and castings.
  • Requires strong analytical skill sets, strong engineering aptitude, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Create component schedules to meet the development schedule milestones.
  • Support prototype builds, troubleshooting prototypes, and other similar activities.
  • Coordinate throughout development cycle with internal departments and suppliers.
  • Use 3D CAD and PDM software as an engineering tool in the layout and modeling of parts, assemblies and vehicles.
  • Produce welding or assembly drawings, design evaluation plan documentation and other simultaneous engineering design documentation.
  • Create and manage parts lists and Engineering Change Instruction documentation.
 
 
Education & Experience:
  • Requires at least two years completed in Mechanical Engineering or related fields of study.
  • 3D CAD system and computer experience desired.
  • Basic mechanical design and prototyping experience is preferred but not required.

May include lifting up to 25 pounds for files, computer printouts on occasion. Frequent use of computer and telephone.
Primary environment: ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
