Mechanical Engineer

Position Purpose
The Design Engineer's purpose is to design solutions that can be assembled and
shipped. Often, they are working from a concept and a budget given to them, and the
best can design solutions that meet or exceed the criteria they are handed, on time, and
under budget. Apprentices are learning the basics of design while earning an
Associate's Degree, Detailers are simply taking designs made by others and creating
detailed blueprints for assembly, and Seniors are veteran Engineers leading teams of
Design Engineers on high dollar, high complexity projects.

Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Begin with a concept from Application Engineering and produce a finished, usable,
  • defect free product design.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated
  • reports.
  • Design equipment using 3D CAD software Solid Works.
  • Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical
  • products, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying
  • knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Confer with engineers or other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve
  • system malfunctions, or provide technical information.
  • Recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Conduct research that tests or analyzes the feasibility, design, operation, or
  • performance of equipment, components, or systems.
  • Investigate equipment failures to diagnose faulty operation, and to make
  • recommendations to maintenance crew.
  • Develop and test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess
  • feasibility, operating condition effects, possible new applications and necessity of
  • modification.
  • Develop, coordinate, or monitor all aspects of production, including selection of
  • manufacturing methods, fabrication, or operation of product designs.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance
  • with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Understand and implement safety regulations into design.
  • Assist as needed with "on the floor" assembly within specialization when necessary.
  • Drive to training, service calls, installations, etc., as needed.

Additional Expectations
  • Availability of some expected travel for project meetings, and occasional installation
  • assistance.
  • Availability to respond to customer equipment issues due to customer production
  • requirements.
  • Availability to attend planned training as needed.

Education and Experience
Experience in mechanical/design engineering
ME 4-year degree or experience equivalent
ME Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
Industrial Math (Trigonometry and Geometry)
Floor experience--specifically with machining or assembly industrial equipment.

Physical Requirements
  • Able to sit for 4-6 hours at a time
  • Able to stand, squat, bend over, pick up 20lbs repeatedly and up to 50lbs occasionally
  • Able to manually operate small hand tools and larger power tools
  • Able to accurately see fine details in prints, on computer, or in machines (unaided or with glasses, magnifying tools, etc.)

Tools and Technology
  • Must be proficient in computer use and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have experience with 3D Modeling Software Solid Works
  • Must be familiar with ERP Software
