Quality Verification Chief Inspector (Transportation Engineer 2, In-Training)

The Opportunity
WSDOT is eager to fill multiple entry level engineering positions as Project Inspectors to support our project offices in Seattle. These in-training positions offer a career path and on-the-job training and allow you to progress through the Transportation Engineer field, achieving the goal class level of a Transportation Engineer 2. As the Project Inspector, the primary undertaking of these positions is to inspect and direct the inspection of construction projects to ensure compliance with contract plans and specifications including environmental permits. 

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Project Inspector will:
  • Inspect or direct the inspection of construction activities, ensuring compliance with contract plans, specifications, permits, and commitments.
  • Ensures that no permanent contract materials are placed without prior approval. 
  • Collaborates with the materials engineering team to ensure that all materials are sampled and tested according to the contract requirements. 
  • Provides clarification of contract requirements to contractors and finds answers to their questions. 
  • Prepares field note records and other pay notes utilizing Share Point software or paper copies, according to current office procedures to initiate payment to contractors for work completed. 
  • Prepare field reports and document construction activities and issues. 
  • Perform materials sampling and testing when requested. 
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 1, the following are required:
  • Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, Construction Management, OR
  • Associate’s Degree and an Engineer in Training Certification, OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent and an Engineer in Training Certification, OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalent and an Engineer in Training Certification. 
 
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 2, the following are required:
  • Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering, or closely related field, OR
  • An Associate’s Degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent, OR
  • An Associates Degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalent and an Engineer in Training Certification, OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent, OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalent and an Engineer in Training Certification
 
Candidates at either level will also have:
  • Ability to read, interpret, understand and review contract plans and specifications. 
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work for long periods beyond standard work schedule, including nights during peak construction season, to meet project deadlines. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with WSDOT staff, contractor personnel, and the Public.
  • Ability to perform testing, measurements, and calculations for inspection and payment of highway construction work. 
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 35lbs of equipment and material. 
  • WSDOT Inspector Certification or the ability to obtain one. 
  • Current unrestricted driver’s license. 
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Experience as a construction inspector inspecting drainage, HMA, bridge construction, environmental and in-water work
  • Experience working for long periods of time on major highways with complex traffic control set ups
  • Experience inspecting fish passage projects with environmentally vulnerable project locations
  • Experience mentoring and directing the duties of coworkers

  • These in-training positions offer a career path and on-the-job training and allow you to progress through the Transportation Engineer field, achieving the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2 depending on qualifications. The salary levels for each are:
  1. Transportation Engineer 1: $58,300 - $78,334
  2. Transportation Engineer 2: $64,285 – $86,461
