Solid Phase Processing Engineer

The Applied Materials and Manufacturing group is seeking an outstanding mechanical engineer to be part of our team in solid phase processing (SPP). This is an opportunity to be part of a world-class, interdisciplinary research program that is pushing the envelope on next generation metals manufacturing for a variety of technology markets. This position will be hands-on with SPP technologies including friction stir welding and consolidation, shear-assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE), and cold spray. The position holder will work with a team of materials scientists and mechanical engineers where the overarching research area is focused on understanding the physics of microstructural evolution in materials subjected to high shear processing conditions. As such, the ideal candidate should possess:

  • An ability to develop creative ideas and be responsible for coordinating aspects of the design-build-test process.
  • A working knowledge of metallurgy and materials selection.
  • A background in machine and tooling design, SolidWorks/CAD, finite element analysis packages and/or thermal modeling.
  • Experience with industrial robot operation and use.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail, as this position will require coordination of fabrication details with machinists.
  • Excellent critical analysis and trouble-shooting skills.

As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to focus and further develop your skills by helping to develop unique material- and application-specific processing approaches, protocols, and parameters for manufacturing applications and component repair. Specific duties will include design of equipment, tooling, and fixtures as well as adaptation of these for use with industrial robots and prototypical manufacturing equipment. The successful candidate can expect to communicate research context and findings, both internally and externally, and contribute new ideas for technical solutions. Progress and growth of responsibilities in this position will include leading small teams and engineering tasks/projects, in addition to producing project reports/manuscripts for external release.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Solid Phase Processing Engineer Level 1 : Applies basic principles of mechanical engineering to well defined tasks with minimal oversight. Works as an individual contributor and builds effective internal working relationships. Receives instruction on required tasks and reports results on time and on budget, while working under guidance from experienced staff. Takes initiative to set personal direction and goals. Contributes to technical products such as reports
and publications. Conducts work with a high standard of quality, safety, and security.

Solid Phase Processing Engineer Level 2: Building reputation through application of science and engineering principles and theories. Develops technical approaches to solve challenges. Builds a technical network within PNNL and teams with others to optimize research. Mentors junior staff and students. Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals. Embraces expectations for quality, safety, and security. Presents at national or international forums. Leads elements or sections of journal articles, reports, and other technical products.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience or MS/MA with 0 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD.
  • Degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, metallurgy, or related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the safe operation of mechanical equipment and in accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting.

  • Demonstrated ability to design (conceptual through full design embodiment), analyze, build, and maintain mechanical systems. Experience specifically in machine and tooling design and CAD.
  • Experience in mechanical testing of materials using standard methods and test equipment.
  • A working knowledge of metallurgy and materials selection.
