Engineering Support Technician | Transportation Technician 3

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Lab Technician/Core Driller to join our The Materials Lab in South Seattle. The ideal candidate will have enthusiasm for working hands on in collecting materials samples on job sites as well as testing such samples in a laboratory environment. You will serve as a key team member on our construct ion projects as you will be testing the integrity of construction materials as well as providing other support functions.
 
 What to Expect
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Lab Technician/Core Driller:
  • Performs various materials tests including but not limited to compressive strength of concrete and grout, aggregate gradations, density and thickness of pavement cores, moisture /density curves for soils and aggregates.
  • Collect material samples on various job sites. 
  • Record, interpret, and document material test results.
  • Test and troubleshoot materials testing equipment.
  • Maintain and assist in calibration of materials testing equipment.
  • Operate coring machine to obtain core samples.
  • Perform traffic control duties.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of materials testing. 
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Qualified Tester in all required WAQTC Test Methods and Modules or become a Qualified Tester within six (6) months of employment and must maintain the qualification on a yearly basis. 
  • Employee must be Nuclear Gauge Qualified to transport gauges to HQ Materials Mab for repair and calibration.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft’s Word, Excel, Outlook and WSDOT MATS etc. 
  • Valid qualified flagger, or the ability to obtain credential within three (3) months of employment. 
  • Ability to work in a lab environment around ovens and furnaces with temperatures ranging from 140 degrees to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. 
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working with various chemicals and compounds in a lab environment. 
  • The ability to lift and transport samples of various materials weighing up to 60lbs. 
  • The ability to traverse uneven terrain and work outdoors. 
  • Employee must be able to input, retrieve and analyze data from various computer programs including Access, Excel, Word, Outlook, MATS etc. 
  • The ability to consistently and dependably be at work and allow for flexibility in work schedules. 
  • The ability to work independently, schedule and prioritize workload, with minimal supervision.
 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: 
  • Prior experience operating a core drilling machine.

  • The salary listed for this position includes a legislative approved 5% premium for workers in King County.
