Welding Engineer/Materials Scientist/Materials Engineer/Metallurgist

Welding Engineer/Materials Scientist/Materials Engineer/Metallurgist  - (16072)
DESCRIPTION

Idaho National Lab (INL) will change the world’s energy future and secure our infrastructure! Join us - innovate the future!

The Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department at INL is seeking applicants for an experienced Welding Engineer/Materials Scientist/Materials Engineer/Metallurgist at the Ph.D level. The (MSE) Department seeks to bolster its current expertise in the area of joining and advanced manufacturing. The position will require R&D in the areas of joining and advanced manufacturing, including welding and 3D metal printing, especially wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), as well as casting/solidification. Thermomechanical processing to support alloy development is also desired. INL has traditionally excelled in the research, development and characterization of materials that support multiple types of advanced energy generation, storage, efficiency and security.

Consequently, this position seeks a candidate with a strong background in solidification and physical metallurgy, in general. The candidate is expected to develop R&D programs as well as support existing programs in the areas of fusion welding (arc, laser, hybrid laser arc welding, etc.), including dissimilar metal joints, and 3D metal printing (wire arc additive manufacturing, powder bed, directed energy deposition, etc.). The end applications are typically focused on component in harsh environments (e.g., extremes of temperature, pressure, high strain rate applications, etc.) as found in power generation (e.g., nuclear, fossil fuel, solar, etc.) and protection applications such as ballistic armor and blast protection associated with National Homeland Security. Complimentary expertise is also desired in materials as well as manufacturing process development for high-strength, light-weight and/or creep/oxidation-resistant metal alloys. An ability to integrate modeling and simulations into development of materials and advanced materials processing approaches is also an important skill for this position.

The successful candidate will be responsible for research and development in the areas outlined above and will be responsible for leading team(s) in areas outlined above. As a principal investigator, the successful candidate will be responsible for writing proposals and obtaining funding from appropriate private and public organizations to execute work in the areas of interest discussed above. As a principal investigator, the successful candidate will also be expected to independently guide others in performing a variety of unique laboratory research studies to prove new principles and concepts related to advanced materials development.

The ability to take a leadership role in developing new programs associated with advanced materials development and assessment in support of grand ideas at the departmental, directorate and lab levels is a prerequisite for this position. This role also requires the ability to assist the leadership team in executing the strategic plan of the organization.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Providing input to departmental business plans and performance of duties of a line management Principal Investigator for assigned work activities.
  • Taking a lead in establishing beneficial collaborative relationship with customers, technical representatives and field operations personnel seeking application based advance materials development and deployment.
  • Serving as a technical resource to others, including mentorship and provision of oversight to junior level scientists
  • Serving as a major or sole contributor to the generation of reports, publications, and proposals and contribution to the generation of additional proposals and concepts submitted for external funding.
  • Conducting and documenting work at an appropriate quality level, including collection and interpretation of laboratory data, planning of research tasks, as well as assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks.
  • Representing the MS&E Department and INL with sponsors and peers through programmatic and technical presentations. Engage in external technical leadership associated with relevant technical conferences or national/international in areas related to main mission as described above.

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD and 2 Years of Experience
  • Q Clearance

Job Information:

  • Salary Grade: 210/220
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills
