Conservation Technician: Engineer

The Huron Conservation District (Huron CD) is seeking interested applicants to serve as an Engineer for the Conservation Technical Assistance Initiative (CTAI). The engineer will work with individuals in the agricultural community to provide engineering services by conducting field investigations, topographic and stakeout surveys, prepare engineering designs and drawings, prepare construction cost estimates, and provide oversight of the installation of engineering structures and practices. These practices may include: livestock waste storage facilities, animal trails and walkways, livestock watering facilities, grade stabilization structures, grassed waterways, and wetland restoration practices. The individual will be expected to perform tasks independently with little supervision or assistance in a timely fashion. Field work will be expected to be completed in a variety of conditions including rain, snow, and heat. The position will be based in Bad Axe, Michigan. Duties will be performed under the supervision of the Huron CD Manager with job assignments/technical assistance from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Required Qualifications:
 
Bachelors of Science degree: Environmental

Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Agricultural

Engineering

Superior customer service skills

Excellent organizational skills

Willingness to learn and take direction from multiple partners

Excellent communication skills including verbal and written
 
Preferred Qualifications:
 
Experience using GIS

Knowledge of USDA Farm Bill Programs Experience providing construction inspection and documentation

Surveying experience using Robotic or

Conventional Total Station, GPS, data collector, and laser level

Competent use of Civil 3D and AutoCAD

Compensation:

This position is funded by an annually renewed grant provided by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and

Rural Development (MDARD) to Huron CD. The technician starting wage will be approximately $50,000/year. The technician will be required to work 40 hours/week and compensated on a bi-weekly basis. Regular hours of duty are between 8:00 am 4:30 pm, but will include some night and weekend hours, especially during construction season. Benefits include paid time off (PTO), holidays, Simplified Employee Pension Plan, life insurance policy, and insurance stipend.
