SUMMARY: We seek a Research Assistant to support several projects related to the impact of climate change on arctic and boreal terrestrial ecosystems. The primary responsibilities are to combine remotely sensed data, process model output, and field-based observations to evaluate recent and future changes in arctic and boreal ecosystems with a focus on disturbances, landscape change, carbon cycling, and climate feedbacks. This requires data visualization and manipulation in GIS, and the ability to acquire and manage large datasets with python, R, or Google Earth Engine, often requiring the use of high-performance computing systems. The research assistant will be expected to work on several projects simultaneously and collaboratively with members of the Woodwell Arctic-boreal group.
Responsibilities:
· Process and analyze multi-temporal and multidimensional process model output, remote sensing data, and other geospatial data, taking advantage of available supercomputing facilities.
· Develop remote sensing-based products related to wildfire, landscape change, carbon cycling, and climate feedbacks.
· Execute a variety of complex, non-routine research procedures with little supervision.
· Schedule own work and lead project implementation with minimal supervision.
· Assist in project planning and contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and manuscript preparation.
Required Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
· B.S. (minimum) or M.S. (preferred) degree in environmental science, geography, ecology, earth system science, forestry, or a related discipline.
· Experience with multi-dimensional process model output, GIS, remote sensing (e.g., Landsat or MODIS) and/or other earth observation data, advanced statistical techniques, and manipulating large data sets.
· Knowledge of forest, disturbance, carbon cycling, and energy budget dynamics is preferred, particularly in arctic and boreal ecosystems.
· Advanced computational and programming skills.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment.

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, fixed-term, salaried, exempt position. The salary range is $48,000 to $55,000 depending upon experience. This position is for a 2-year fixed-term with the potential to extend dependent upon funding. Woodwell Climate offers a very generous benefits package.
