R&D Industrial Engineer - Advanced Programs (Early/Mid-Career)

What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves exciting issues for the nation's security? Advanced Programs is looking for a motivated and self-starting R&D Systems Engineer to act as an Industrial Engineer to join the team of production professionals supporting a variety of production missions for the Nuclear Security enterprise. As an Industrial Engineer, you will provide solutions to bridge the gap between production processes and decision makers by using computational capabilities to devise solutions and answer questions. You will be performing activities such as production operations modeling and improvements using discrete-event simulations, optimization models, facility layouts, data analysis, visualization and more. Experience in Industrial Engineering, production, and/or manufacturing is necessary to be successful in this position.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Gather information, perform assessments and studies with production staff, conduct production floor walkthroughs and processes mapping activities, translate production information into model data.
  • Develop analytics models to assess, optimize, and make predictions for various production authorities involved in the development and production of Neutron Generators, Power Sources, Energetic Components, and Advanced Programs (focused on urgent rapid product realization efforts).
  • Document model results, identify emerging areas of opportunity, lead investigative and exploratory projects, and present findings to peers and senior management.
  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams and other specialists on large, center-level projects.
  • Lead facility redesign efforts including accurate capture of current state and implementation of methods to determine alternative future states.
  • Work on other projects to be determined by the organization's needs and individual interests. These may include supporting strategic projects that seek to adapt or advance Center capabilities to meet new needs across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). These projects may include collaboration with a variety of internal and external NSE partners.
 

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s and advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Systems, Industrial, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or relevant subject area or;
  • 4 years of demonstrated experience in lieu of an advanced degree
  • Ability to obtain and maintain and DOE Q Clearance
 

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in one or more of the following:
  • Python, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), R, SQL, FlexSim, FlexScript, Arena, Simio, Gurobie, CPLEX
  • Discrete event simulation
  • Optimization
  • Data mining, analysis and visualization
  • Lean Six Sigma or other standardized problem-solving methodologies
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in diverse team environments
  • DOE Q clearance

Advanced Programs (2520), will integrate, adapt, and grow Sandia National Laboratories’ (SNL’s) new product realization capabilities to meet the evolving needs of SNL and the greater Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). Departments 2521 and 2522 are integrated high functional teams that cooperatively tackle a variety of product realization challenges for the NSE and others.

Security Clearance
