DTSC is dedicated to protecting human health and the environment from the harmful effects of toxic substances by identifying toxic chemicals; educating the public through outreach efforts; encouraging the manufacture of chemically safer products; restoring contaminated resources, enforcing hazardous waste laws, and reducing hazardous waste generation. The SCP is comprised of scientists, engineers and analysts, all working together to reduce toxic chemicals in consumer products throughout California.

Job Description
Under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) or the Supervising Hazardous Substances Engineer I, the Environmental Scientist (ES) performs technical duties including evaluating potential exposures to chemicals in products and the associated public health and environmental hazards; identifying Chemicals of Concern and Priority Products; and evaluating Alternatives Analyses submitted by product manufacturers. The ES evaluates environmental and human health information, evaluates large data sets, conducts scientific literature reviews, and prepares technical reports. The ES assists in the development of regulations and guidance to support the implementation of the Safer Consumer Products (SCP) regulations, analyzes proposed legislation that may affect the SCP program, and assists in the development of legislative proposals. The ES participates in multidisciplinary teams to execute projects according to accepted project management principles and in-house project management tools. The ES participates in public hearings and workshops and may represent the SCP program at meetings and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Possession of a bachelor's or advanced degree with a major in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline. Admission to a masters or doctoral degree program in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline shall be considered to meet these education qualifications.
Registration as a senior in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of a degree before they can be considered eligible for appointment.
