Conservation Educator (Spring/Summer)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  

 
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Conservation Educator located in Cheyenne, WY. The Conservation Educator will further outreach and education efforts by assisting in the planning and leadership of regional conservation day-camps throughout the state of Wyoming and five-week-long overnight conservation camps near Dubois, Wyoming. Additionally, the position will assist in planning and executing the educational logistics of the Wyoming Outdoor Expo. The position also will assist in creating lesson plans/teaching resources and will teach various conservation education programs in the spring and fall, providing the public with information about wildlife, fisheries, habitat management, ecology, hunting, fishing, and other outdoor skills. This position is a nine-month contract beginning in mid-January and tentatively going through mid-September.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
 
  • Utilizing Microsoft excel to coordinate customized schedules for up to 175 school groups attending the Wyoming Outdoor Expo. 
  • Assisting in the development of lesson plans & activities for events, including the Wyoming Outdoor Expo.
  • Planning details and logistics of summer camps, under the supervision of the conservation education coordinator. 
  • Creating educational materials with the assistance of Game and Fish staff.
  • Ability to serve as an on-site coordinator and leader among three temporary, seasonal conservation educators at various summer camp programs. 
  • Leading safe, engaging, and fun three-day day-camp experiences for middle-school-aged students.
  • Leading activities at and serving as an on-site supervisor for two weeks of overnight camps for 9th-10th graders and three weeks of Family Camp. 
  • Assisting instruction at hunter education courses, field days, and other R3 (recruitment, retention, reactivation) programs. 
  • Delivering high-quality, engaging educational programming to youth and family groups about wildlife, habitat, and conservation.
  • Routine clean-up and setup of program areas; maintenance and organization of education equipment/materials. 
  • Basic survey analysis & report preparation

 
 QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

 
Preference will be given to those with a bachelor's degree in education, natural resource sciences, wildlife/fisheries biology, ecology, or other related fields.
Preference will be given to those who have experience safely supervising students in an outdoor education environment.
Preference will be given to those with wilderness first aid/wilderness first responder certifications.
**Must have a valid driver's license.
 
KNOWLEDGE: 

 
  • Must be able to work well independently with minimal supervision and work well with others on a team and serve as a peer leader.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with all ages and backgrounds.
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions, and be comfortable pulling trailers and operating 4WD vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain composure and delegate while continuously changing work conditions. 
  • Must be able to responsibly maintain direct supervision of up to 25 youth while involved with fishing, archery, air rifle, orienteering, science investigations, backcountry hikes, and team builders.
  • Knowledge of Wyoming ecology and wildlife, in addition to experience with other outdoor recreation skills.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a passion for working with students.
  • Must demonstrate teaching skills and the ability to implement creative "hands-on" teaching methods and the ability to create new educational content. 
  • Ability to manipulate large quantities of data to create complex scheduling matrices and/or pivot tables utilizing Microsoft Excel

 NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 
  • Requires flexible schedule, including travel and long days, working evenings and weekends.
  • Position requires statewide travel and extended stays including up to 5 weeks at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp in Dubois, WY during June and July.
  • Position requires Wilderness First Aid certification, CPR certification & background check (all provided by WGFD).
 
 

NOTES:

 
  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
  • Tentative starting date is January 16, 2021; the tentative end date is September 15, 2021.
  • Uniform and other necessary gear will be provided when in the field.
  • Department housing is not provided except while traveling statewide or at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp.
