Seasonal Field Assistant

The field assistants, as part of the upland field crew, implement the innovative Starr Ranch invasive species control and coastal sage scrub and native grassland restoration project. This is a research-based project to control Cynara cardunculus (artichoke thistle) and other invasive species without chemicals and restore to rare native habitat. The incumbent will be part of a field crew (6) who perform mechanical and physical removal of artichoke thistle and all aspects of invasive species control and restoration including non-chemical control of other invasive species, native seed collection and planting, and quantitative monitoring. Experience in outdoor physical work and plant sampling in the field desirable as is enthusiasm for working outdoors. Opportunity to live on our 4000-acre Sanctuary.
 
We have an evolving COVID-19 safety plan, e.g. new staff will quarantine on the Ranch for 14 days after arrival. We will follow CDC and Orange County Public Health recommendations. The targeted start date will January 11, 2021 and run approximately six months from start date.

  • Responsible for mechanical and physical removal of artichoke thistle and all aspects of invasive species control and restoration including non-chemical control of other invasive species.
  • Responsible for restoration activities including soil preparation, native seed collection and planting.
  • Responsible for experimental tests of weed removal and restoration techniques, and quantitative monitoring. 
  • Preferred undergraduate degree in biological, conversation, ecological science or related field. 
  • Must work well with a team or independently.
  • Must be able to work outside in varying conditions and terrains (steep slopes, heat, etc.) with or without accommodation.
