Industrial Engineering Internship

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER INTERNSHIP
 
Position Overview:
Under the direction of Director of Environmental Health and Safety, acquire the knowledge, skills and experience to gain a real world perspective on how to complete a time study for all positions in an egg processing and production facility. Position will work closely with the Safety Intern who will be performing Job Safety Analysis. Daybreak provides student interns with a unique and challenging environment in the food and agricultural industry and the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in various aspects of engineering, quality, and operations.
 
Summer Project
  • Work closely with EHS Intern to conduct time studies of all positions at the assigned facilities to identify potential waste and provide recommendations and solutions for reducing waste and make the operation more efficient
  • Outcome will include:
  • Work on process improvement projects that will provide exposure to the engineering tools and concepts that help with the production of quality work
  • Develop Industrial Engineering skills with regards to not only time observation, standard work creation, continuous improvement identification, but also waste elimination.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate efficiencies and study product flow to provide data to Director of EHS to improve efficiencies
  • Experience all tasks within each department to understand the process and the business
  • Provide weekly updates to Director of EHS and work with management of each department to discuss findings and ideas.
  • Learn about different systems, their advantages and disadvantages
  • Learn and apply concepts related to egg breaking (liquid egg) operations
  • Learn and apply concepts related to egg grading (shell egg) and packing operations
  • Learn and apply concepts related to food safety, food quality and quality systems
  • Learn and apply concepts related to egg production
  • Learn and apply concepts related to pullet growth
  • Learn and apply concepts related to Feed Mill production and delivery
  • Learn and apply regulatory compliance guidelines related to egg production and processing
  • Learn and apply bio-security systems and protocols
  • Observe stakeholder activity during the workday and discuss with supervisors and Director of EHS options for optimizing workflow
  • Learn and understand the current and future training necessary for new stakeholders
  • Understand the importance of providing coaching for stakeholders on an as-needed basis
  • Receive regular feedback on performance
  • Learn and apply concepts related to operational metrics
  • Learn and apply concepts related to the financial impact of operations
  • Learn and apply concepts related to safety and human resources management 
  • Present a detailed explanation of your experience at Daybreak Foods for the Corporate Operations team and fellow interns at the end of the summer
Education:
Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, Agri-Business, Agriculture Engineering, Dairy Manufacturing, or related field of study.
 
Experience:
  • No formal career related work experience required.
  • Leadership in scholastic, academic, agricultural, industrial engineering or skill related organizations preferred, but not required.
  • Sophomore, Juniors, and Seniors accepted
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Polished and flexible oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to interact with individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word
  • Working knowledge of other Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Ability to work through others to execute tasks and accomplish goals
  • Willingness to listen, learn and apply concepts learned during functional rotations 
  • Ability to formulate basic, realistic, attainable short-term objectives based on limited experience and observation
  • Understanding of basic time management principles developed through academic and work related experiences
  • Basic organizational skills, or the desire and diligence to learn them
  • Motivation and creativity to utilize the supervisors and resources available to get the most out of the time you spend at Daybreak Foods
