Senior Research Specialist - Department of Entomology

The Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a Senior Research Specialist who will support bee behavior, physiology, and ecology research activities in Dr. May Berenbaum’s lab.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct independent research in insect behavior, physiology, ecology, and pollinator health.
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students doing work in these areas. Supervision duties to include assigning duties, scheduling hours, training students in processes, and evaluating student work.
  • Collaborate with campus bee researchers, local beekeepers, and interested citizens on issues related to bee management and pollinator health.
  • Represent the Department of Entomology by attending conferences sponsored by entities that provide research funds for bee health.
  • Mentor undergraduate assistants for the Individual Plan of Study in Entomology and in the Integrative Biology or related majors.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Bachelor’s degree in biology, life sciences, or a related field and have three years of research working with bees in a laboratory setting, including beekeeping, behavior analysis, data collection and data management
 
Preferred: Advanced degree in biology, life sciences, or a related field; experience working with honey analysis, including characterization of phytochemicals and antioxidant capacity; and experience supervising and mentoring students.  
 
The successful candidates must have knowledge in the areas of bee behavior, physiology, and ecology including skills in pesticide toxicology bioassays and statistical analysis; strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to explain and clarify ambiguous or complex policies and procedures; excellent organizational skills; the ability to work collaboratively; and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
 
SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
