TITLE: Park Technician I STATUS OF EMPLOYMENT: Part-time, Year Round SALARY CLASSIFICATION: AFSCME – Appendix C Wages for Part-time Workers BENEFITS: Hourly Employee Benefit Package GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Part-time Park Technician I maintains and enhances Park District's lands and facilities by performing unskilled and semi-skilled jobs in a manner, which assures the highest standard of maintenance, safety and service to the public. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Park Manager, or as assigned, to the Assistant Park Manager, Project Manager, Crew Leader or designated supervisor. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May be called upon to provide routine work direction to part-time park technicians I and seasonal maintenance employees. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions: 1. Performs unskilled and, as capable, semi-skilled work of a routine, repetitive nature in a responsible manner; typical duties including but not limited to: • Preventative and routine maintenance of park lands, buildings and facilities such as picking up trash, picnic maintenance, trail maintenance, landscape, signs, and painting/staining. • Building and facility maintenance such as waxing, buffing, washing windows, walls, floors, and fixtures, minor repairs, painting, service maintenance and other janitorial duties. • Trail maintenance such as resurfacing, grading, pruning, trimming, installing and maintaining signs, steps, culverts and drainage. • Turf, landscape and plant maintenance functions such as seeding, sodding, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, aerating, spraying, plant installation and harvesting, soil preparation, irrigating, plant propagation. • Plant pest control such as chemical applications. • Plant/tree removal. • Roadway, parking lots and walkways maintenance such as plowing, grading, patching, striping, drainage systems and seal coating. SMP – Job Description – Part-time Park Technician 1 Revised 5/31/18 • Equipment maintenance such as oil and filter changing, lubrication, blade sharpening and belt adjusting. • Performing tasks at specialized facility operations and maintenance locations such as swim parks, campground, and athletic fields. • Maintain winter sports areas. • Installing, maintaining, and removing signs and boundary markers, as assigned. • Operates trucks, tractors, mowers, and various tools, equipment and machinery used in park maintenance and development functions. • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment 2. Proficient in handling and applying pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. 3. Assists in special events and activities offered by the Park District. 4. Operates and maintains the following equipment: • Trucks; tractors; farm and light construction equipment; front-end loader; chainsaws; mowing equipment; utility vehicles; small engine equipment. 5. Carries out duties and responsibilities in safe and efficient manner to maintain safe work environment and surrounding area. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action, and promptly notifying supervisory personnel. Participates in the safety and risk management programs of the Park District. 6. Notifies supervisor of key issues promptly, and advised of work that needs to be done and progress of assigned jobs. Other functions: 1. When designated and assigned, provides work direction, changes work assignments, and corrects work activity of other part-time park technicians or seasonal maintenance employees. 2. Works with skilled-level employees (Technician III, Carpenter, Utility, Maintenance/Utility) toward the completion of construction, renovation projects and repair work of' facilities. 3. Continue toward self-improvement by participating in ongoing training, seminar/conference and related coursework. 4. Performs related duties as apparent or assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Education: Graduation from High School or GED required. Associates degree, certifications or specialized training in park and grounds maintenance preferred. 2. Experience: Experience in grounds maintenance or related fields preferred. 3. Knowledge and abilities: • Ability to perform a wide range of maintenance and simple construction tasks, some of which include substantial manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions. • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Physical Requirements: Physical condition adequate to perform all related duties and assignments. Essential Physical Demands and Working Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk (often on uneven terrain), talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee may be exposed to high, precarious places. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; extreme outside weather conditions including temperature, humid and wet; fumes or airborne particles; and confined spaces. The noise level of the working environment may often be loud. CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT: Must successfully complete a 180 day probationary period. Promoted employees must successfully complete a probationary period per the collective bargaining agreement.
