Reactor Inspector, GG-7/9/11; FPL 13

This position is located in Lisle, Illinois. The supervisor is David E. Hills. This is a Bargaining Unit position. This position is not subject to Confidential Financial Disclosure reporting requirements.
The most desirable candidates will have a background in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Materials Science Engineering.


Responsibilities

Inspects and evaluates the effectiveness of a wide variety of licensee engineering programs, performance, and support activities for nuclear facilities in such areas as design verification, plant modifications, and equipment evaluation, maintenance, performance, and testing. This position places particular emphasis on mechanical systems and components, inservice inspection processes, and plant equipment degradation. A strong focus is placed on material selection; weld design and field installation; nondestructive and destructive examination of piping, plant equipment, and welds; degradation mechanisms; aging management; root cause evaluation of equipment, material, and weld failures; evaluation of degraded components for continued service including evaluation of wear rates, crack propagation, and impacts on component and safety system function; and temporary and permanent repairs. Substantive work is conducted at nuclear power plant sites with an emphasis on in plant observation and evaluation of equipment and interaction with facility engineers to ensure compliance with regulations and industry codes and standards and identification and resolution of plant safety issues. Performs reactive inspections and assessments in response to events at nuclear facilities.

Qualifications

You must meet basic education and knowledge requirements that apply to Federal engineering positions at all levels. Generally, this knowledge is met by having at least a Bachelor's degree or higher degree in a relevant professional engineering discipline from a school of engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Dependent on the grade level of the position, one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level, or equivalent, in a closely related occupation performing similar duties may be required.  
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is defined as work experience applying professional engineering principals and practices to inspect and evaluate the effectiveness of a wide variety of licensee engineering programs, performance, and support activities for nuclear facilities in such areas as design verification, plant modifications, and equipment evaluation, maintenance, performance, and testing.

Education

GG-07: Bachelor's degree in or related to an engineering discipline, with at least a 2.95 overall GPA or at least 3.50 (3.45 rounded) in the major.
 
GG-09: Master's degree in or related to an engineering discipline OR Bachelor's degree and one year of post degree work experience in or related to engineering.
 
GG-11: Doctorate degree (PhD) in or related to an engineering discipline OR Master's degree and one year of post degree work experience OR Bachelor's degree and two years of post degree work experience in or related to engineering.
