The Engineering Geologist will play a key role in supporting the goals of the State and Regional Board’s Strategic Plan by evaluating, inspecting, monitoring, and regulating timberland management activities on non-federal lands. Duties:
The Engineering Geologist (EG) will perform and evaluate technical and policy work within the Redding Forest Practice Unit of the Forest Activities Program (FAP) and will oversee the implementation of timberland management activities within the Redding sub-region of the Central Valley Region. The EG will represent the Board in a multidisciplinary team of state agencies responsible for environmental review of forestland management projects in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), evaluating geologic and hydrogeologic aspects of land management activities associated with timberland/forestland management to determine compliance with the California Water Code and the Boards’ plans and policies. Using reasonable and sound geologic principles, the EG will 1) perform technical assessments of timberland/forestland management activities and reports to evaluate projects implementing construction/reconstruction/maintenance and use of erosion controls related to roads and watercourse crossings for water quality protection; 2) serve as a liaison to dischargers; 3) evaluate site monitoring results and water quality data to assess timberland management practices for potential water quality degradation resulting from activities; 4) evaluate the effectiveness of management practice implementation including potential for negative cumulative effects; 5) conduct environmental and geologic investigations of timberland management activities to evaluate compliance with the California Water Code and Water Boards’ plans and policies, including Waste Discharge Requirements and Monitoring and Reporting Program requirements.

Working Conditions
Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position and might be expected to comply with Executive Order (EO) 22-25 after July 1, 2026.
In accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy and GC 14200, the successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment. Proof of residency may be required.
Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.
In addition, note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.
